I bought this CD for the instrumental music from the episode "The Inner Light", which is my processional music at my wedding. But, the rest of the CD is awesome too! It's fun to listen to the memorable musical suites from each incarnation of Trek (TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY), and it works as a great background music CD too when you're just trying to unwind. Trekkies will love!

Read the fine print before you buy this one. It may look like a full-sized CD album, but the disk actually contains only two tunes, for a total of less than eight minutes of music. The first tune is basically the opening music from Deep Space Nine with a drum going on in the background that does not fit with the music's beat at all. The second tune was one that I did not recognize. If they really wanted to release a disk with only 8 minutes of music, it could have been put on a 3-inch CD.

Like his fellow film composer John Williams, the resume of the late Jerry Goldsmith is the kind that any self-respecting film composer would kill to have. That resume spans every Hollywood genre: westerns (HOUR OF THE GUN); horror (THE OMEN); World War II (PATTON); and, of course, science fiction (the original 1968 sci-fi classic PLANET OF THE APES). And one of his greatest scores in the last-mentioned genre is the one he composed for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE in 1979.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Wow, this score brings a tear to a Trekkie's eye. It's beautiful, futuristic, haunting and most of all thematic and bold. Cliff Eidelman has proven he can compose with the likes of Horner and Goldsmith by writing and conducting a score that breaches beyond the everyday into the further reaches of musical immortality. If you love this score as much as I do, you will also love Horner's "Wrath of Khan" and perhap even more so Goldsmith's "Star Trek, The Motion Picture" or "Insurrection."

If listening to true Star Trek music hits you buttons in just the right way, you will need to add this score to your collection, it really is worth it.

Symphonic Suites from Star Trek

This music WAS used in STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES. There is a little confusion with respect to that point in the info printed inside the CD package where it is stated that this music "for one reason or another was never used." The outside back cover states that it "was never used in its entirety." Big difference. It's just that the three suites here have been assembled from ALL of the music composed for these specific episodes, so they include music which was cut from the finished product(s). The sessions were, from what I understand from the insert, supervised by the composers themselves.

I don't know if anyone realized, but this soundtrack is missing several pieces from the movie--just watch the movie and you'll know the ones that were left out. Thus this isn't an "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". The same thing was done with the Star Trek 2 soundtrack. Will James Horner ever bring out the complete ones? Who knows?
