Like his fellow film composer John Williams, the resume of the late Jerry Goldsmith is the kind that any self-respecting film composer would kill to have. That resume spans every Hollywood genre: westerns (HOUR OF THE GUN); horror (THE OMEN); World War II (PATTON); and, of course, science fiction (the original 1968 sci-fi classic PLANET OF THE APES). And one of his greatest scores in the last-mentioned genre is the one he composed for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE in 1979.
While STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was considered by many to be very ponderous, in contrast to the classic 1960s TV series that spawned it, a majority of people found Goldsmith's music to be spot-on perfect. And that it is. Apart from the majestic main theme ... Read More:

Very good performances by various orchestras. There are A LOT of star trek themes in this CD so it may be a little overwhelming to play this CD from start to finish. Tracks #2, #9, and #11 are my favorite. Jerry Goldsmith just does a fantastic job on Star Trek arrangements in general. #9 by Frederic Talgorn is probably the most unique of all the arrangements on the theme and I happened to like his the best. Very nice chord progressions with the high woodwinds and lower strings providing a good pulse to the piece. His ability to interweave the star trek theme towards the end of the piece was also expertly handled. The speed and general pacing of this piece is much faster than the original recording that is played in the end credits of "Generations." ... Read More:

Steven Spielberg's Jaws has one of the most recognizable movie themes ever..the shark theme. But the "da-dum da-dum" music that made John Williams's career was already done ten years earlier...and is on this on this soundtrack.
The Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine featured an ominous machine was the sci fi equivalent of a giant shark: a silent, big, grey behemoth that swallowed spaceships whole. The tension was established via the soundtrack by a simple "da-dum" theme. Like "Jaws", it would start slowly and softly and gradually turn up the tempo and the volume.
I think "Doomsday Machine" is a great soundtrack by itself. "Amok Time" is a terrific companion...its a completely different sound with a sixties pseudo-spiritual ... Read More:

This CD has been around for a while now but it is still truly a good compilation of Science Fiction film music given a new dimension by being recorded digitally. The BATMAN selections composed by Danny Elfman are very powerful combing rousing elements with moody enigmatic passages. Most of the other selections are short or confined to one piece. The selections from TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and POLTERGEIST all composed by Jerry Goldsmith are all performed with passion and demonstrate Goldsmith's great versatility. Bernard Herrmann's "Outer Space" from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is brief but in effect makes it all the more powerful by its great innovation and lasting impact. The WAR OF THE WORLDS "Prelude" by Leith Stevens was a great surprise.

I don't know if anyone realized, but this soundtrack is missing several pieces from the movie--just watch the movie and you'll know the ones that were left out. Thus this isn't an "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". The same thing was done with the Star Trek 2 soundtrack. Will James Horner ever bring out the complete ones? Who knows?
