This is a great CD, even if it is outdated (no theme from First Contact, Insurrection or Nemesis.) But this CD is great. The sound effects are annoying, that much we can all agree on, but for those bashing the concert arrangement of the Original Series theme...this is the arrangement by Alexander Courage himself arranged for concert, its performed the same way by John Williams and the Boston Pops on the CD "Out of This World" among other Williams/BPO compilations. I would rank this CD below Silva's "The Star Trek Album" and Varese's "The Ultimate Star Trek", but above Naxos "Star Trek" album. For most people, especially discerning classic music afficienados, they'd rather own the soundtrack with the entire suites included, than to own a compilation. This series by Telarc is an exception, since the performances, while not definative, are still spectacular. And being its a Telarc release, sound quality is always excellent.

Telarc has release a whole slew of these symphonic Sci-Fi themed CDs, and while all of them seem to have something to offer, they all fall short of feeling like a piece of art onto themselves. This CD comes closer to being an artistic statement as any in the series, and if not for the misstep of the overlong, boring rendition of the orginal Star Trek Menagerie suite done for the TV pilot, this could have ... Believe it or not I am new to the Star trek world. I got this one and some other ST movies. I knew about the characters due to the pop culture effect it has had on society. But it took to long to get started and was slow and boring in several parts.

Steven Spielberg's Jaws has one of the most recognizable movie themes ever..the shark theme. But the "da-dum da-dum" music that made John Williams's career was already done ten years earlier...and is on this on this soundtrack.

The Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine featured an ominous machine was the sci fi equivalent of a giant shark: a silent, big, grey behemoth that swallowed spaceships whole. The tension was established via the soundtrack by a simple "da-dum" theme. Like "Jaws", it would start slowly and softly and gradually turn up the tempo and the volume.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Wow, this score brings a tear to a Trekkie's eye. It's beautiful, futuristic, haunting and most of all thematic and bold. Cliff Eidelman has proven he can compose with the likes of Horner and Goldsmith by writing and conducting a score that breaches beyond the everyday into the further reaches of musical immortality. If you love this score as much as I do, you will also love Horner's "Wrath of Khan" and perhap even more so Goldsmith's "Star Trek, The Motion Picture" or "Insurrection."

If listening to true Star Trek music hits you buttons in just the right way, you will need to add this score to your collection, it really is worth it.

The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith

When I first purchased this cd, my original intent was for the soundtrack of Star Trek, which has always been a favorite of mine. I was also motivated by the fact that the orchestra performing is the London Philharmonic, which I consider one of the finest in the world. To this day, this cd stays in my player at bedside. When hearing the news that Mr. Goldsmith had passed away last year, I decided to purchase the 6 cd collection in his memory from Fox. This mans talent was truly a rare and extraordinary gift which he shared with us. I have given this cd as a gift several times because I felt I was giving a wonderful, moving, inspiring rendition of the exquisite talent of this man. Star Trek - Nemesis

I love Jerry Goldsmith. While darker than almost all of the other soundtracks (and certainly-thankfully- not as proselytizing and moody as Jim Horner's ST3), I find this one to be as rich as any others with a more percussive tone to it.

My love for this aside, my only complaint is that there is quite a bit more in the way of music from the movie that did NOT make it onto the CD. The entire battle scene from the point of "Stellar Cartography" to the point where the pathetic Romulan warbirds get toasted in about 14 seconds - none of that is on the cd, and it would have been really nice if it was. Cliff Eidelmann's Star Trek 6 soundtrack was a little drawn out for some, but it was a largely complete soundtrack. Us Trekker music buffs really would have appreciated ... Read More:

Star Trek: Sound Effects from the Original TV Soundtrack

I listened to tracks 4,5,7,8,13, and 14.

Tracks 4,5,7, and 8 are DEFINITELY from the pilot episode
"The Menagerie" with Jeffrey Hunter (Captain Pike).

The long, drawn out transporter sequences on tracks 4 and 5
are easily recognizable from "The Menagerie", as is track 7
the Alien Planet Surface, and track 8 the Communicator Beeps
(it's the uncharacteristic "long beep" from "The Menagerie").

Track 14 the Warp Drive is a longish sequence and again sounds
suspiciously like the one heard on "The Menagerie".
As such, these sound tracks are not very representative of the
series, as the device sounds changed subtly but definitely
when NBC picked up the show with Shatner, Nimoy, et al, in 1966.

The Science Fiction Album

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. I really love this CD, is one of my favorites included in my collection of Kunzel recordings. It contains lots of hard to find music (Bill Conti's The Right Stuff) and also original material composed by musitians of the orchestra.
