There's some excellent music on this CD. I'm not very fond of compilations, unless they are somehow the "complete" music of a musician, but this one deserves five big stars. I just knew some of the artists represented here, Charlie Byrd, Marian MCPartland, but the rest of the performers offer outstanding renditions of barzilian music. The sound quality is top notch. So, if you want to relax and change your mood into a jazzy summer breeze, this is the right CD.

this two part album is indeed a prelude of better things to come: bossa nova came to existence a few years later, from this magificent album one can almost hear Jobim and it is not a stretch to say that he (Jobim) is the intellectual heir of Almeida and Bud Shank. A must posession for all samba and bossa nova fans out there.

This was my introduction to Samba, and is one of my all-time favorite albums. I can't understand a word of it, since I don't speak Portuguese, but that doesn't matter in the slightest. The rhythms and musicianship, the vocals and recording quality, but mainly the joyous happy SOUND of it remains a treat every time it plays. Writing this review reminded me there is more out there, so I just ordered the first collection, and am off to look for more from Clara Lunes and Alcione, two of the most seductive, husky-voiced women on the planet. Gals will find their counterparts in Cino Monteiro and Martinho Da Silva. Fabulous.

Romantic, jazzy, relaxing. What more could you ask for? Astrud's voice has romantic, lilting quality that is very unique. To my ear, there are a few spots where she sounds a little off-key, but for me it just adds to her charm. I could listen to this CD for hours on end - and I have. I wish I knew more about music so I knew all the right words to describe the music. All I can say is, every single song on this album is a winner, and the instrument playing is superb. You will not regret buying this CD. Ah...so nice!

After contributing what many, including myself, believe to be one the absolute greatest cop film scores of all time for Dirty Harry, it was no surprise that jazz buff Clint Eastwood would want composer Lalo Schifrin to return to score the sequel to the trendsetting cop thriller. Magnum Force was a very different movie from Dirty Harry, this time the villains are Harry's very own - rogue police officers that have grown tired of the legal loopholes criminals use to escape justice and have become Judge, Jury AND Executioners. The tone of the movie was far less serious and placed greater emphasis on over the top action. This 2001 Nonesuch record is a sad example of the label's love for gimmicky programming, and it's sad to see great violinist Gidon Kremer and his chamber ensemble Kremerata Baltica associated with it. In the 1970s and 1980s, composers in both the Soviet Union and the United States explored styles of calm contemplation and minimal development.

Arvo Part, the devoutly religious Estonian composer, is represented here by two pieces. "Tabula Rasa" (1977) is a sort of concerto grosso for two violvins, prepared piano, and string orchestra. Its first movement, "Ludus", is loud and active where a theme is gradually developed before collapsing into aleatoric writing. Our favorite CD is "The Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz, and when we heard the female artist on this CD we were "wowed" by her voice. It's perfect music for a garden party or intimate dinner for two.

I fell in love with the fantastic sounds of Andean folk music on my trip to the beautiful country of Chile last year. As our tour guide drove us through the fertile valleys and hills between the high Andes and the Pacific Coast, the flute sounds gave us the feeling of travelling back in time with the indigenous peoples. I ordered this CD so that I could evoke the wonderful memories of a lovely vacation. It does exactly that and I love it.
