If I had to pick a "scene" in rock history that seems to transcend every pop staple, it would be those illuminary Brazillians from the late 60's. There are so many super-talented and visionary artists from that movement, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the passion and exhuberance of these albums. Caetano Veloso is one of those artists. I sometimes feel like the romantic drama and devil-may-care virtuosity of this album could drive anyone to tears, or at least to youtube, trying to find any way to vicariously experience whatever socio-political hell was responsible for an artist like Veloso to grab everything meaningful in life, shoot it out of an existential cannon; watch it float through outerspace and land in the Amazon. On a level with Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and I probably wouldn't have purchased it if it weren't for Al Di Meola's Play's Piazolla. Like Kind of Blue, Rough Dancer is far more than the sum of it's parts. Worth owning even if you aren't into tango music.

Strange you should mention Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto in this review and leave out Joao Gilberto. It is true that Tom Jobim is a musical genius, wrote many of the songs that we identify as bossa nova, and is one of only two musicians that I know of to have an international airport named after him (the other is Louis Armstrong). But Joao is generally considered to be the inventor of the particular style that came to be called bossa nova [...].

So by all means buy and listen to anything by Tom Jobim, but be sure to buy and listen to anything by Joao Gilberto also.

Sep. broke into the mainstream with Beneath and Arise. I though Chaos would end up being a misstep. WRONG!!!
Good title track........the rest sucks.
With Seps. new found fame they started touring with bigger name bands and they obviously took the WRONG advice from these bands. They abandoned their speed and brutality for what?
Jungle music?
Garbage?
All of the above? Yes.
Boring, unlistenable, unmemorable.
Skip this musical turd and go with Beneath or Arise.

I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

Based on the mostly ultra-positive reviews here, you would think that this is the one of the finest recordings ever issued. Well, I'm not a bandwagon guy and if I am overly excited about an album, I put it away to listen later to see if I hear it the same way again. And so it is with this as I listen again after a long cooling off period.
I like Antonio Carlos Jobim and own many of his recordings. Most, if not all of the songs on The Composer of Desafinado Plays can be found on other Jobim recordings and often better performed. This CD is more intimate in some ways than his others, but it is more of a reworked "best of" compilation than something new.

Getz Plays Jobim: The Girl from Ipanema

I enjoy this CD so much. It's really mellow. I picture myself walking around little streets in Europe listening to this. I can't help but grin when I play it. It's a nice departure from a lot of stuff that's out these days.

Flute Music of the Andes

I fell in love with the fantastic sounds of Andean folk music on my trip to the beautiful country of Chile last year. As our tour guide drove us through the fertile valleys and hills between the high Andes and the Pacific Coast, the flute sounds gave us the feeling of travelling back in time with the indigenous peoples. I ordered this CD so that I could evoke the wonderful memories of a lovely vacation. It does exactly that and I love it.
