Walk the Line

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
by: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Original Soundtrack

Release Date November 15, 2005
I enjoy this CD very much but it is not for a Johnny Cash purist.
This is Joaquin Phoenix singing Johnny Cash songs so if you are a true Johnny Cash fan you would be better off buying another CD. But I am a Joaquin Phoenix fan so I got what I wanted. I gave it four stars because I wanted even more of Joaquin's singing. If you buy this CD expecting to hear lots of Reese Witherspoon you will be disappointed. She was in the movie enough to win an Academy Award, but you won't hear much of her on the CD.

CD-Charts Music : Big Love: Hymnal

Big Love: Hymnal

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
by: David Byrne

Release Date August 19, 2008
May David Byrne never retire. Though his pop albums likely quench a larger part of his fan base, his instrumental works nonetheless remain intriguing listens. His latest work along these lines, "Big Love: Hymnal," falls right in the tradition of his juicy non-pop work "The Catherine Wheel" (a largely early instrumental work), "The Last Emperor," "The Forest" and "Lead Us Not Into Temptation." Listeners who enjoy those albums will also swoon to this one. The music has a lilting pleasant quality at times reminiscent of The Penguin Café Orchestra. Byrne's unmistakable voice provides a thick layer of "oohs" to many tracks. The opening track, with its right-out-of-the-bible sounding title "Art Thou Greater Than He?" will dance among pleasure center neurons ... Read More:

French Kiss: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
by: Various Artists

Release Date May 09, 1995
This is easily my go-to soundtrack, it's lifted me out of many a crappy mood and I've listened to it endlessly over the years. It features a variety of songs, classic and contemporary, that are evocative of France and each one is special.

On the classic side you have Ella Fiztgerald and her amazing voice on "I love Paris". There's Louis Armstrong, his rendition of La Vie En Rose is second only to his "Wonderful World" for simple, easy elegance, and the amazing Charles Trenant (who also wrote La Mer) give us Verlain.

On the contemporary side there's Van Morrison, the under-appreciated (in America anyway) Zuchero, and Kevin Kline with his theater background in the Pirates of Penzance and other musicals steps up the plate again ... Read More:

The Forbidden Kingdom - Original Motion Picture Score

Release Date July 22, 2008
This soundtrack delivers an exceptional mix of Eastern culture with a Western feel. From the up tempo sections to the very melodic slow moving parts, it makes you feel part of the music. David Buckley is truly a premiere film composer.

Little Mermaid

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
from: Walt Disney Records

Release Date October 03, 2006
I have such a soft spot for musicals -- especially Disney musicals. The Little Mermaid is one of my very favorites -- most of the songs are so catchy I can't help but tap my foot and sing along. After a bad day there's nothing better than turning this puppy on full blast. Every song you remember is here, including the wonderful orchestral score.

The bonus songs are terrifying, however. Whoever thought that the Little Mermaid needed to be put to horrific, half-baked pop/r&b and shrieked by children of dubious talent should probably have large rocks thrown at them. Just a suggestion. However, I chose to ignore them, and I rate this disc by the value of the first disc, whose superior quality easily drowns out the second CD's terrifying contributions. ... Read More:

Good movie - songs are from the Viet Nam era and the movie depicts the aftermath of college students of that era. I am one of them.

Hostel - Part II (Unrated Widescreen Edition)

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
starring: Lauren German, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips, Roger Bart, Richard Burgi
directed by: Eli Roth

Release Date October 23, 2007
I enjoyed the first Hostel movie due to it's entertainment/shock value. It was actually pretty funny, but at the same time it had very ominous undertones. Hostel 2 however, is a much better movie in my opinion. Director/Writer Eli Roth really put a lot into this movie. This movie had smarter characters, smarter plot points, and it was executed better. Roth made the smartest decision of all when he decided to continue the storyline started in the first Hostel. Too many movies have attempted to do too much with sequals, instead of sticking to what the movie is supposed to be. Lets face it, everyone that watches Hostel 2 knows exactly what to expect. It wouldn't be Hostel if the characters don't end up being tortured by the Elite Hunting Club. Friday the 13th has to ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Jonathan Livingston Seagull: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Jonathan Livingston Seagull: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

CD-Charts > Music > Soundtracks
by: Neil Diamond, Lee Holdridge

Release Date October 25, 1990
I've had this CD for over 20 years now. It's a masterpiece in its own right. When you listen to a Neil Diamond song, you are focused on that one song as a great moment for Neil, even if the rest of his album may not impress you. But this album of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" is something to be cherished from Neil Diamond as a whole concept, a project.

On this album, Neil Diamond's voice really is only merely another instrument in what can easily be perceived as an instrumental album. Although he sings or speaks on most of the tracks here, it's the instrumentation that makes this album more than just another Neil Diamond album. Two tracks barely charted on the radio from this album. The song "Be" charted #34, and "Skybird" even lower at #75. But the album charted ... Read More:
