I can't even tell you how many times I've purchased a movie soundtrack only to be disappointed by the mediocre (at best) collection. Before Garden State, I'm pretty sure the last soundtrack I bought was for Men in Black back in '97. Major disappointment there.

So when I locked onto the Garden State soundtrack, I wavered. I checked out the song clips on Amazon and decided to sit on it for awhile. But I couldn't get the clips out of my head. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to only know 30 seconds of a great song? So I finally gave in. I purchased the CD, and worried that somehow it was going to turn out like one of those movies where they show all the good parts in the preview.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

He's my favorite composer, and I'm glad his first score after his hiatus is an Indy score. I was hoping he would have used more of the jungle-themed ideas he employed in The Lost World, but the few times he does are great anyway. My only gripe is the sound quality--it's too sharp and "digital." It's kinda hard to listen to sometimes. And the "Crystal" theme is a little lackluster. I like Mutt's Robin Hood-like theme, though it takes getting used to. Overall, a great score, definitely better than most of the crap that came out this summer.

Fifty years ago, my love for the Broadway musical began here. A pre-adolescent, I would listen to my older brother's recording of the original Broadway cast album and be transported to a differennt land and time with great music that still resonates. Broadway and I have both changed considerably over the years, and, while the music has always since been a part of the popular culture, I never again paid much listening attention to the album. I made sure my children knew it. The movie version helped to have then love it, too. I just recently purchased the original cast album cd, now digitally remastered. And I am fifty years younger.

I am personally not one to give 1 star reviews, but this really deserves it. I am pretty picky about the Broadways I listen to, and this just didn't make the cut. Firs of all, it's amazing that on amazon it says to buy it together with The Phantom of the Opera, just don't. Buy the Phantom and skip this. I must admit that when I first put it into my car's cd player I was pretty much stunned. It started with booming bad keyboard music and some guy singing almost a slavery sort song. I hoped the next track would get better and it didn't. I'm not saying the singers can't sing, but not all of them were that good. The music itself was bad, the keyboards killed it for me. Streets Of Fire: A Rock & Roll Fable (1984 Film)

The movie looked promising on every level. Seeing it in a theater, it fell extremely short of my expectations. Good actors who for some reason delivered lines in this movie like they were reading it off a cue card. And played it so "stereotypical" of the "character type" they were portraying it was sometimes "smirk inducing".

That said...in the end it is kinda fun to watch. I bought this soundrack 'cause it is a great sample of some great rock acts of the 80's (without sounding 80's). You've got the "voice" of Contact (who had a hit with "10.9.8"), Marylin Martin (w/ Stevie Nicks doing some of the best b/g vocals on her own song), Maria Mckee doing Tom Petty "justice" yet again.

This cd is the exact soundtrack from the movie. When I first saw the movie I was a little iffie about the music, but I saw it again and the music captured me.I love Johnny's voice on here and all the others. The actual music speaks for itself and it plays out just as a Broadway musical would. Go for it and take a mystical trip down Fleetstreet.

Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet. How could you go wrong? They really don't make them like this anymore. Jay Lerner's fantastic songs and a wonderful treatment of T.H. White's "The Once and Future King", one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, this cd is a must have for any fan of great musicals and probably all of us baby-boomers who still remember our country's own Camelot.
