Until about two months ago, I had absolutely no clue who Noel Gourdin was. It was then that I saw the video for his amazing first single, "The River," on VH1 Soul and knew I had to get this album. The album pretty much came out of nowhere (he needs more promotion), but I'm glad it did. "The River," a beautiful ode to a past love interest, remains my favorite song of the set, but Gourdin has many other great songs to offer on here. The opener, "One Love," is a strong, soulful, and melodic track. It should definitely be the next single, if there is one. "Open" is a catchy and entrancing mid-tempo. I was in Starbucks one morning and heard a song overhead that was so beautiful that I had to go back to the counter and ask what it was. Amos Lee - 'Arms of a Woman'. Had never heard of him. I went out and bought the CD. I love his voice. I don't like all of the songs, but most of them are wonderful. And of course, my favorite is 'Arms of a Woman'!

I got this back in December, and I'm now kicking myself for not discovering her earlier albums, and I'm now in the process of buying them from Amazon. She can sing, and for the younger people reading this, you don't have to look like Beyoncé to get an album. (Sharon Jones is not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, by the way. Besides, she's a better singer than Beyoncé and most of the pretty girl singers that the Music Industry has forced on R&B/Pop/Rap and Hip Hop the last few years.) I'm eagerly awaiting her next release.

The music is outstanding. The analog sound on the vinyl has a wonderful warm sound as only analog can have. The only surprise was that it doesn't seem to be stereo. If that is indeed the case it should be noted on the record.

Since the early 1960's Irma Thomas has been creating great music. Her early hit Time Is On My Side was covered by the Rolling Stones who were early admirers of her soulfull voice.

Her last CD won her a Grammy and I believe this is an even a better record.

As the liner notes explain, the concept behind this album is to bring Thomas together with a group of soulmate pianists. Whilst I am usually dissapointed in "with friends" type records this is not in that vein.

Guests take a back seat with some great instrumentation, mainly accoustic, and occasioanl or backing vocal only, Irma's wonderfull voice is allowed to shine.
