Dr. Donald Byrd was one of the early crossover/smooth jazz artists. This album shows how forward thinking he was within that style so many years before Kenny G., et al. He (Dr. Byrd) knew that blending an r & b feel with a distinct jazz sensibility had lots of potential. This album has good stuff, both musically and historically.

This album is a must for anyone who likes salsa or even for eventual listeners. If you want to listen to very good salsa instead of the craps that are issued everyday, please never miss this music. The voice of Lavoe is like never and the arrangements of Willie Colon, the orchestra, the brass, everything is impressive. I cannot understand at all why this album is not reissued. Anyway, if you have the chance to get it, do it.
In disbelief, I read Rickey Wright's review as I returned to buy yet another 'The Song Lives On' CD for yet another devotee. More than eight years later, this Joe Sample and Lalah Hathaway masterpiece still receives universal praise on jazz websites and various blog entries by people who know good music.
Sometimes it makes one wonder a) how someone could acquire a job based upon having a good ear for music, yet refer to Joe Sample's piano playing as "monotony" and Lalah's singing as "boring."
b) If, eight years later,he could actually stand by and believe that his scathing review is still accurate and that the thousands of other positive reviews are wrong.
Perhaps he was bored that it wasn't Janet Jackson, who ... Read More:

Blue Note recorded a number of hard bop musicians in the 50's and 60's, such as Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Many of these recordings introduce young trumpeters, including Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. In fact, Morgan had been a side man of Blakey's before moving to be a leader on his own.
This is one of Morgan's better efforts. There are several things noteworthy about this album.
1- Morgan is outstanding. His tone is clear and strong. While he doesn't play "pretty" like Art Farmer, he is capable of lyric playing. He has been influenced by Clifford Brown, although his tone isn't quite as warm as Brownie's.
2- This group played great together. The always welcome warm-toned tenor of Hank Mobley is a plus, and Herbie ... Read More:

For some strange reason due to the marketing people at Blue Note, this album came out a few years later after the more commercial, "The Rumpboller" w/Joe Henderson, possibly to cash in on the success of "Sidewinder" also with Henderson. But make no mistake about it, this album is so much different from the rest of Morgan's many albums. For one, the title track is a long modal tune with some interesting progressions and also the first time Morgan utilized guitarist Grant Green to brilliant effect. Also his Blakey teammate Wayne Shorter provided simpatico support for Lee, they were so well matched that they sounded like one--the only other perfect match would be altoist Jackie McLean (check out "Leeway"). The rhythm section is sublime with for the ... Read More:

This cd was not what I expected. Poorly engineered and lackluster performances by two Hammond B-3 giants. I had the album years ago, so maybe my tastes have changed.

This is one the most positively surprising albums I've got recently. Its musical range goes from classical, to Jazz, to country music. The incredible thing is that this vast musical knowledge crossover happens seamlessly, full of soul and groove. There is nothing hermetic about it. Despite the musical complexity, it sounds simple when these guys are playing. Really fresh, creative and competent. I definitely recommend this CD.
