I can't believe I'd never come across this guy before: this is the most amazing jazz flute I've ever heard! He's got a really phunky and soulful style. And the back-up band is A-list: Duane Allman on guitar and Donald "Duck" Dunn (formerly of Booker T and the MGs) on bass. If you don't own this album, you need it!

I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

Why did I purchase this? Well, I'd finally managed to get my head around Coltrane's "Mediations" and learned to love it. I happened to pick up a used disc by Alice Coltrane "Journey in Satchimandana". Both of these works feature Mr. Sanders. I got curious and discovered his web site. If you haven't been there you should stop in there soon! The "Tunnel" video is wonderful! So anyway, I picked this up along with "Jewels of Thought".

Both releases are almost 100% wonderful but I do have one thing that bothers me. Leon Thomas' singing is good, he's a good vocalist. There is nothing at all wrong with his bizarre "yodeling" affect... But... it is over used to the point of distraction in my opinion. It really catches the new listener ... Read More:

Willie Colon Lo Mato

This album is a must for anyone who likes salsa or even for eventual listeners. If you want to listen to very good salsa instead of the craps that are issued everyday, please never miss this music. The voice of Lavoe is like never and the arrangements of Willie Colon, the orchestra, the brass, everything is impressive. I cannot understand at all why this album is not reissued. Anyway, if you have the chance to get it, do it.

The Very Best of Norman Brown

While the title is slightly misleading, as it's basically a compilation up until he signed his deal with Time Warner before "Celebration", it's a pretty good collection. It's a little heavy on the covers, but that's not entirely bad because there's no one in smooth jazz who can cover R&B classics like Norman can, and he does it well here with covers of classics like "Any Love", "After the Love Is Gone" and "For the Love of You".

This is a terrific album and really is in the top 5 of Grant Green albums. Elvin Jones's polyrhythmic madness amazes me and Green is an unsung jazz guitar virtuoso.
Trouble is, its like an outcast. Its not been newly remastered, it still retains the old Blue Note packaging and its not part of the exclusive Rudy Van Gelder series which it must be part of! Some would say thats good, others not, and it still has a good sound nonetheless but it just feels old and left behind.
Thats my only complaint: the packaging isn't new but it doesn't matter. The music is fantastic! Get it if you like really cool tunes, jazz guitar or just jazz in general!

IF SOMEBODY PUT TOGETHER THIS COMPILATION OF SONGS FOR A MASTER'S THESIS ON THE HISTORY OF WESTERN SWING MUSIC, THEY COULDN'T HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB THAN THIS. THIS IS A FOUR CD BOX SET WITH INFORMATIVE BOOKLETS IN EACH CD WITH LOTS OF PICTURES AND BIOGRAPHICAL INFO. ADMITTEDEDLY, THE EARLIEST STUFF DOESN'T QUITE "SWING" AS MUCH AS THE LATER RECORDINGS, BUT THE MUSIC IS STILL GREAT AND IT IS INTERESTING TO HEAR HOW THE MUSIC EVOLVES OVER TIME. A BARGAIN PRICE, I HAVE A FEW BOX SETS IN THIS SERIES (THE PROPPER LABEL) AND THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC PRODUCTIONS AND VALUES. WHAT OFTEN GETS OVERLOOKED AS THAT WESTERN SWING IN MANY WAYS WAS A PRECURSOR TO ROCK AND ROLL, ALONG WITH R&B "JUMP BLUES" (AT LEAST TO MY EARS, ANYWAY).

The Best Blue Note Album in the World Ever

Blue Note's got the artists, so this album is a logical extension of their catalog. Many of these artists and songs are classics in their own right and deserve attention. For myself, I have a tendency to use these "best of" compendiums to find something I think I would like to buy, which I then usually do go out and get. Eventually, I no longer have to return to the "best of" collection, but this one I do. Sometimes you just don't want to hear all Herbie Hancock or Kenny Burrell, in which case, it's nice to use this compilation to get a "dose" and then move on. I especially like "Cantaloop", which does a jazz classic with some funky cutovers and mixing to make a modern jazz/rap classic. Very neat. A roomate turned me on to these guys about 10 years ago with this CD and I have seen and heard most of their stuff since because of this CD. Fred Wesley is the most amazing trombone player and I was blessed to have seen him back then with the Allstars at the Fox Theater in Boulder. He's a powerhouse on stage. Karl is just one of the most all encompassing players out there. He's not a showboat, but just plays from his heart. So very, very talented. The other guys are pretty talented too. Which is so fresh in this day and age with all the silly fluff out in the music scene. This is a must have for anyone who loves funk, R&B and jazz. Nothing fancy.....just funky and fun to the core. You'll feel it in your soul.

Those familiar with the 60's Blue Note era recognize Rudy Van Gelder (RVG) as one of the chief architects responsible for shaping the Blue Note sound. However, making the transition from vinyl to CD was never quite as satisfying ... until now. I was never very fond of the RVG recording style of drums/piano/bass, center stage ... with lead instruments - trumpet and/or sax separately tracked on either left or right channel.

This "Jazz After Midnight" Hybrid Stereo SACD sounds as good as any I've ever heard. For audio quality and that sense of "there-ness" this production really delivers. The music itself is engaging enough, but may not be everyone's cup of tea ... mostly standards by a few better known folks.
