Andy Bey: Wow! A sexy, 70-something jazz singer who cradles his piano and gives back. Thank you, Andy, for keeping keeping on! Come back to Seattle, one more time again. Here's another keeper-CD from this wonderful singer a powerful listen: American Song!

Last week in Boston I (somewhat unreasonably, don't tell my wife) splurged on a whole load of CDs when visiting Newbury Comics. One of these records is Galactic's latest album From the Corner to the Block. Having finally found the time to listen to it (don't you find it annoying that you can't load a CD on your iPod from a computer other than your primary? Guess I remember now why I'm not a big Steve "no-DRM" Jobs fan!), I wanted to share my first impressions with you.
I've talked about Galactic here in passing already, but I haven't reviewed any of their records (my favorite of which is and remains the awesome We Love 'em Tonight: Live at Tipitina's). In a way, From the Corner to the Block is both a result of the trend the band has ... Read More:

Yet another spectacular gem from the master of the sax. Your neck muscles will be ten times larger after a week of wearing out the groove in this record and bobbing your head to the funky, FUNKY Black Frost. Did I say funky? Funky as #$%@. The title track is also a classic. Do yourself a favor and get it with Reed Seed.

I have been searching for this album for the last few years. I wanted to listen to and be inspired by the sounds which came from EWF's and Ramsey Lewis' collaboration. I LOVE THIS CD! Every cut is exciting, with a hint of innovation thrown in for good measure. I wonder if some of this music can be performed by musicians today, these guys were so ahead of themselves! After I purchased the CD on Amazon, it arrived right away (within a week), in excellent condition, ready for me to listen to. No problems! This CD is exactly what I wanted!

i cant agree w any who say this is not in the same class as red clay--- this jazz fusion funk whatever u want to call it-- if miles invented/perfected it which he may have - he is a jazz god ! then hubbard and this gang all miles alumnae---jumped in and had some crazy fun which is so evident on this 1970 date----freddie unloads here right from the start---and joe henderson catches the fire too and he blazes like never b4 here----by hubbards second solo on the first tune- he settles into more of a groove and w the rest of this amazing roster of players its quite a thrilling bubbling mix----a dizzying and divine madness percolates herein ! for me this is a classic gem-and the best in this genre of its era--tho miles was still going strong at this time--- i ... Saw Jeff twice in concert in Chicago and just past week in Pompano Beach, Florida with Peter White, Gerald Albright, Jeff Lorber. So bought this new album at that concert. Holy smokes, Grand Central will just blow you away. It has the same energy as Grand Central Station. One of those great road trip songs, I never tire of it. Mojito is also an infectious tune that you will be humming in your head over & over. But can't leave out Shockwave, it will grab you too. My 10 year old Grandson has now become a Jeff Golub fan too. But trust me on this, you have to see Jeff in person live in a concert, he is quite a showman and will take off on a lot of his songs, that you just don't get in a CD. But be sure to add this one to your collection and you'll get the Jeff ... Read More:

Blue Note recorded a number of hard bop musicians in the 50's and 60's, such as Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Many of these recordings introduce young trumpeters, including Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. In fact, Morgan had been a side man of Blakey's before moving to be a leader on his own.
This is one of Morgan's better efforts. There are several things noteworthy about this album.
1- Morgan is outstanding. His tone is clear and strong. While he doesn't play "pretty" like Art Farmer, he is capable of lyric playing. He has been influenced by Clifford Brown, although his tone isn't quite as warm as Brownie's.
2- This group played great together. The always welcome warm-toned tenor of Hank Mobley is a plus, and Herbie Hancock hadn't yet gotten commercial ... Read More:
I love Wes's playing, but there are too many tracks with organ that overwhelms the sound of the guitar.
On the first few tracks, the organ, honestly, sounds like it belongs in a circus.
There are a few songs that redeem this album, like "Wine and Roses", so I would get it because The Man is playing, but "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" is a better choice.
I gave it 4 stars because of, you guessed it, the annoying organ. "Sorry" to all the keyboard players who dig that aspect of this album.
Hope this helps.
