I've been listening to Jazz heavily for years now, but I just checked out "Know What I Mean?" by Cannonball recently. I don't know why I've waited so long to actually listen to this album, but it was worth the wait. The group just plays so well together and with Cannonball and Evans fresh from their working with Miles it's nice to hear how well they play together. The rest of the rhythm team - Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums - work very well together from their working with the Modern Jazz Quartet. It's just top notch jazz -- while I'd love to hear Bill Evans stretch a bit more his statements are very nice. His Village Vanguard recordings from the same year is a great example of the best jazz interplay, this group maintains a different ... Read More:

Jimmy Smith gets some fairly big names together for "The Sermon". The title track is a very long jam with Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks, Kenny Burrell, and Art Blakey. It's a medium-tempo lope. The soloing is pretty good, but I think the song's main sin is that it doesn't build up as it goes on. It stays somewhat flat. The group hits the theme well together at the end, but it's nothing like, say, "Muntu Chant" by Odean Pope on the "Locked & Loaded" CD. That song has you rolling in the aisles and speaking in tongues at the end. "J.O.S." is a faster song, and says just as much in 8 fewer minutes. The lineup is different on each of the three songs, only Jimmy Smith and Lee Morgan play on all three. "Flamingo" is done by the smallest group, ... Read More:

What makes this CD so compelling to own, and so satisfying once you own it, is that you get to experience one of the great jazz musicians of all time exercising his considerable talent, skill, and judgment, in a variety of different musical capacities, all in one place. As a pianist, Silver was at the forefront for many years, as evidenced by his playing with so many other jazz talents, such as Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham and Miles Davis. All but one of the songs on this CD were written by Silver, so this CD displays the depth and musicality of Silver as a composer, a skill that is not always found in other jazz musicians. Indeed, if this collection contained Horace's signature piece, Song for My Father, this would be one of the most complete jazz ... Read More:

Yet another spectacular gem from the master of the sax. Your neck muscles will be ten times larger after a week of wearing out the groove in this record and bobbing your head to the funky, FUNKY Black Frost. Did I say funky? Funky as #$%@. The title track is also a classic. Do yourself a favor and get it with Reed Seed.

It's too bad Grant Green didn't live longer than he did; he was and would have continued being so much more than this single CD offering. I'm grateful for this snapshot of him though.
So amazing, it's 47 years ago that he recorded this...
I can't stop playing Green's adaptation of "It ain't necessarily so"; if it isn't the best jazz quartet performance ever, well...I don't know what is. Due respect to Miles, Parker and other venerables. But, if this rendition doesn't move you or get your overwhelming listening attention, absolutely nothing in life ever will.
It compels me to go out and buy new stereo equipment, since it feels like an injustice or disrespect to play it on my dated home equipment.
My goodness, the flowing, conversational guitar of Mr ... Read More:

Andy Bey: Wow! A sexy, 70-something jazz singer who cradles his piano and gives back. Thank you, Andy, for keeping keeping on! Come back to Seattle, one more time again. Here's another keeper-CD from this wonderful singer a powerful listen: American Song!

Blue Note recorded a number of hard bop musicians in the 50's and 60's, such as Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Many of these recordings introduce young trumpeters, including Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. In fact, Morgan had been a side man of Blakey's before moving to be a leader on his own.
This is one of Morgan's better efforts. There are several things noteworthy about this album.
1- Morgan is outstanding. His tone is clear and strong. While he doesn't play "pretty" like Art Farmer, he is capable of lyric playing. He has been influenced by Clifford Brown, although his tone isn't quite as warm as Brownie's.
2- This group played great together. The always welcome warm-toned tenor of Hank Mobley is a plus, and Herbie Hancock hadn't yet gotten commercial and he also excels. ... Read More:
I love Wes's playing, but there are too many tracks with organ that overwhelms the sound of the guitar.
On the first few tracks, the organ, honestly, sounds like it belongs in a circus.
There are a few songs that redeem this album, like "Wine and Roses", so I would get it because The Man is playing, but "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" is a better choice.
I gave it 4 stars because of, you guessed it, the annoying organ. "Sorry" to all the keyboard players who dig that aspect of this album.
Hope this helps.
