The (slightly) humorously titled "Emphasis" is (nearly) 47 minutes of soul jazz. It's not hardcore jazz, but it's a step above jam band or (pedestrian) funk music. If you're familiar with Stanton Moore's "III", you'll hear a lot of similarities, though Skerik's saxophone is (sorely) missed. Also, this one is emotion-free. Though the CD's (pretty) good, and it's enjoyable, the problem is that they could use another lead voice. The songs (all written by the group) are in a variety of styles (some funk struts hard, or struts soft, some rock more than others) but it can run together. Stanton Moore's drumming is superb as always, and Robert Walter tried hard on Stanton's CD's. Will Bernard plays with a bluesy tone and style. This is recommended ... Read More:

If you like jazz guitar instrumentals, then you'll love Norman Brown. Norman's guitar style & sound is very much like George Benson, but with Brown's own, unique flair blended in. His music is very soothing and I find it a great way to relax and unwind. I'm well on my way to collecting all of Norman Brown's CD's and highly recommend him to any Jazz lovers music library.

This album contains one of the best performances on jazz guitar! Solos on No Blues and Impressions are simply unbelievable...His guitar must have been on fire after those performances.

This album is completely different in character from all Groover Washington's other offerings particulary of the 70s. Although his saxophone style can still be recongnised, I would have sworn is was done by another artist. Maybe it was the influence of Bill Withers on the production. By it showed a different side to Groover, a kind of finesse in its finishing. That is why I think it might have been "an out of body experience for him"

Nevertheless a great work.

This is typical of the majority of the stuff you find on "Smooth Jazz" radio stations.

The problem I have with this is that most of what's played is *not* original material.

Despite the fact that the artists on this CD produce a *lot* of original material, it's not the stuff that gets played much.

The radio stations go with the "safe" stuff.

It's really too bad, because many of the top artists in this format have great orignal material.

Oh and another thing...

Artists like Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye and Michael McDonald are *not* smooth jazz.

Adult Contemporary, Light Rock and R&B are NOT "smooth jazz".

Marcelo Maciel has summed up all the details below, and this album really fits in very well with any general music collection. I actually like this Brazilian album more than any other of Cannonball Adderley's I've heard, and thankfully it ages like good wine and just gets better with time. Be sure not to get the 2006 Limited Edition for $23.99 though, the extra 14 dollars only ensures that you don't get the 2 bonus tracks (the alternate take of Corcovado and the single version of clouds). I can't see many copies of that one being sold.

I am so glad to see that the Verve Remixed/Unmixed is still going strong, and this new addition is no exception. The selections for this disc are similar to the first unmixed disc in that it touches on different flavours of Jazz and Blues...a definite must for any Jazz collection

i cant agree w any who say this is not in the same class as red clay--- this jazz fusion funk whatever u want to call it-- if miles invented/perfected it which he may have - he is a jazz god ! then hubbard and this gang all miles alumnae---jumped in and had some crazy fun which is so evident on this 1970 date----freddie unloads here right from the start---and joe henderson catches the fire too and he blazes like never b4 here----by hubbards second solo on the first tune- he settles into more of a groove and w the rest of this amazing roster of players its quite a thrilling bubbling mix----a dizzying and divine madness percolates herein ! for me this is a classic gem-and the best in this genre of its era--tho miles was still going strong at this time--- i think agharta was still ...
