Ballads, I believe, are the real test of musicianship. And this collection has a judicious and delicious selection which is perhaps the best balanced one I know featuring the all time great moments - Clifford Brown's treatment of Rodgers and Harts Where or When will bring tears to your eyes - as well as quirky less known works - If the Moon Turns Green sung by Billy Holiday - the "old", Ben Webster, along with the "new" Mark Whitfield. Please don't think this is or should be "background" music. You only have to listen to Bill Evans playing with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock on CD1 to realise this is a collection of some of the greatest moments in 20th Century music, regardless of genre.

let' em roll is definitely one of john patton best albums. in a somewhat strange quartet setting, the band is comprised of a who's who on their respected instrument - john patton at the lead on organ, the incredible grant green on guitar, the incomparable bobby hutcherson on vibes and the lesser known otis finch on the kit. the music all has a tight jazz funk sound and occasionally hints of latin, lounge and instrumental memphis soul. not surprisingly, patton gets the largest chunk of solo time, but green and hutcherson get their share. green seems a little uncomfortable with the backup roll, often playing a little lazily and harping on the repetitive chords (which is somewhat strange since he has been an excellent sidemen on many occassions). when ... Gene Harris was the first musician i ever liked. He had such a simple style built on gospel, blues and swing. Before buying this CD, i already had owned over 20 of Gene's group CD's, whether they were with the RB trio, his quartet, an all star session, or his big bands that he has lead. after buying all of those Gene CDs, there werent many more CDs to get of him. so i got into many other pianists in the meanwhile. i got particularly attached to Art Tatum, who is THE solo pianist of the last century. So i obviously had high standards for solo playing. then i got this CD and i loved it for its contrast with Tatum's complex style.

No surprise that "Bomojazz" reviewed this rare album that no one seems to know about...you're a legend man. Yes a good date for Ammons indeed. The sound quality is not perfect, but good enough to enjoy thoroughly. This band souns very big for a trio, but when you have a decent organ player on stage it always sounds bigger. Gene plays well thoughout the whole show, especially on C Jam Blues. There is a nice "flight of the bumblebee" insert at the end of his solo on that track. Don't know how many copies are left out there, but it is worth picking up. I tend to play it loud.

This series from EMI-Capitol constantly surprises with their judicial selection of tracks, and when the artist in question had less than 10 hits to begin with they more often than not give you all of them.

This is, unfortunately, not one of those occasions. The instrumental group Young-Holt Unlimited only had five charted hits (R&B, Billboard Pop Hot 100, and Adult Contemporary (AC)) and just three are here. In addition, they do not include one of the flipsides nor are there any liner notes.
