by: Ralfi Pagan

Release Date June 29, 2004
Just bought this CD on the strength of a song I heard on local radio..."Make It With You"...that I thought was fantastic. This album does not disappoint. Ralfi Pagan has a unique melting-pot style that reflects different types of music, all the while being sincere and heartfelt. A great CD that is mellow, cool, and will beg you to listen a thousand times...well worth the price and if you have friends that hear this guy, they will undoubtedly ask..."WHO IS THIS?!?"...turn them on to him.

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Wes Montgomery

Release Date March 25, 1993
I've been a Wes Fan for close to 15 years. I'm a jazz guitarist, and Wes inspired me to play. So, when I heard that Mosaic records was discontinuing this compilation - and having only owned 5 of Wes' 12 Riverside ablums, I decided to purchase this. My primary motivation relates to Concord Records purchasing the rights to Fantasy Records, which owned the rights to Wes' music. For years, I had received catalogs from both Fantasy and Concord; in 1998, both reissue programs were strong, and I was immediately aware of each company's instinct for preservaton when I scanned through their respective catalogs. However, over the years, Concord's catalog dwindled to next to nothing, while Fantasy (emboldened, to be sure, by the royalities from Creedence Clearwater ... Read More:

by: Roy Ayers

Release Date February 28, 1995
Roy Ayers journey to legendary recognition is a unusual one for an artist who's creative heyday was in the 70's. Throughout that decade Roy Ayers and his backing group Ubiquity produced a number of outstanding songs touching on every style from early jazz-funk to disco. In spite of the solid quality of his material, He wasn't able to compete with heavy hitters like Miles, Herbie, and Isaac Hayes and he was only able to acquire a cult following. Fast forward to the hip hop generation of the 90's and you hear bits and pieces of his music. If you look at the album credits from Brand Nubian, Mary J Blige, and A tribe Called Quest, you'll most likely see his name as a sampling source. Thanks to crate diggers and to the acid jazz movement of the 90's, Mr. Ayers began receiving ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Grant Green

Release Date August 05, 2003
Green is in characteristically good form, and it's a kick to hear Lateef playing straightahead and without resorting to his exotic paraphernalia kit (not even on his dates with Cannonball does he play with more soul--his simple, carefully developed solo on "Blues in Maude's Flat" with its allusion to "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" worthy of transcription by any young tenor player). Harewood is an underrated, swinging drummer, supplying even more fire than Elvin does on his dates with Grant Green. McDuff will clinch the deal for some. He certainly ensures a grooving, cooking session (though like so many B3 players, his chords and right-hand licks can become familiar in a hurry, making him the least interesting of the three soloists). And the session, above all, captures Green's full, ... Read More:

Bluesy Burrell

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Kenny Burrell With Coleman Hawkins

Release Date March 18, 1997
This CD contains the original Moodsville LP issue of BLUESY BURRELL, with an additional bonus track from a different date thrown on. Four of the tunes pair Burrell with Coleman Hawkins, to excellent effect. TRES PALABRAS is wonderful; both Hawk and pianist Tommy Flanagan shine here. In fact, as usual, Tommy Flanagan adds immensely to the success of this date. Hawk is in great form. Contrary to the review below, my copy's sound was excellent - no hiss at all. A most enjoyable CD.

CD-Charts Music : Incredible!

Incredible!

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Joey DeFrancesco & Jimmy Smith

Release Date June 27, 2000
It's important to see the title of this album not as a self-promotional epithet but as a fittingly accurate homage to Jimmy Smith, who was frequently billed by Alfred Lion at Blue Note as "Incredible" (later, as "Amazing" and "Unpredictable"). Smith caused heads everywhere to turn when Lion released his recording of Dizzy Gillespie's "The Champ," and by Lion's admission, the organist singlehandedly kept the label solvent until the late '60s. It's that spirit of respect for the instrument and its primary exponent--and not some sort of "B3 shoot-out"--that sets apart "Incredible!" as both a cooking session and a savory feast. Smith indeed could be unpredictable, turning in performances that could range from desultory and indifferent to chaotic and out of control. But DeFrancesco exhibits not ... Read More:
