How can you miss with this great jazz combination ~ Ron Eschete (guitar) ~ Luther Hughes (bass) ~ Paul Humphrey (drums) ~ and the man himself tickling the ivories, Mr. Gene Harris ~ make up THE GENE HARRIS QUARTET.
Featuring some old and some new ~ "BYE BYE BLUES", a classic tune from the early days ~ "BLUES IN HOSS' FLAT", big number from the Count Basie era ~ "NICE 'N' EASY", Alan & Marilyn Bergman song recorded so matter of fact by Frank Sinatra, with a new arrangement giving us another side to this jazz favorite by Gene and his associates ~ "CHILDREN OF SANCHEZ", composed for the film by Chuck Mangione and hand picked by Gene with this haunting and original arrangement for piano and ... Great CD. I'd recommend it to anybody who likes solid sax and drums. Parker is a wonderful sax player. The other players are wonderful, as well. This was our first exposure to him. We're going to go see/hear him live in February.
Release Date March 17, 1998
One of the best jazz compilations ever. It is so smooth and sexy, not only for rainy afternoon but for every day and night, whenever you want music to fill your life with greatness and positivity. I cannot imagine someone seriously gave one star to this CD, stating that "This is not jazz"??? Well, if jazz is only a bunch of hypercomplex improvisations that one should have a 20 year trained ear to understand and enjoy, then you are missing the point of music. I really like this minimalistic approach to jazz, not a single tune tends to be too "improvisational" and thats very good.

I love jazz, but tend to prefer melodic ballads or renditions of old standards. This CD easily met both those criteria and far surpassed my expectations. Each song is a winner. I've only had this CD a couple of weeks, but it's already one of my favorites.
Release Date October 17, 1995
This CD would be great even if it wasn't the soundtrack to a wonderfully fun movie. The jazz is light enough to be enjoyed by most.
Release Date October 25, 1990
Great cd for Hammond B-3 Organ Jazz playing. But I was a little disappointed because I was expecting the song "Alligator Bogaloo" that was played on YouTube by Dr. Lonnie Smith to be the same that was on this cd. But its not. Its still a great cd, and I'm glad that I bought it. But I was still wanting the other "Alligator Bogaloo" song.

This is one of my favotite albums in my cd collection. Its the kind of music that put your mind at ease and makes you walk in the clouds. Its elegant and tasteful. A true gem in jazz music.
In disbelief, I read Rickey Wright's review as I returned to buy yet another 'The Song Lives On' CD for yet another devotee. More than eight years later, this Joe Sample and Lalah Hathaway masterpiece still receives universal praise on jazz websites and various blog entries by people who know good music.
Sometimes it makes one wonder a) how someone could acquire a job based upon having a good ear for music, yet refer to Joe Sample's piano playing as "monotony" and Lalah's singing as "boring."
b) If, eight years later,he could actually stand by and believe that his scathing review is still accurate and that the thousands of other positive reviews are wrong.
Perhaps he was bored that it wasn't Janet Jackson, who I'm sure he would refer ... Read More:

I never bought jazz album because I prefer pop music, recently I was introduced by my myfriend jazz music and the first album I bought was this CD. It's nice and smooth, especially David Benoit with his Linus and Lucy plus exotic asia touch in Mr.Chow. Suddenly I fall in love with jazz and since then, I bought a lot of jazz album such as Michael Franks, Barry White, Al Jarreau. That's why I call this album is my first step in Jazz Music.

I've been a Wes Fan for close to 15 years. I'm a jazz guitarist, and Wes inspired me to play. So, when I heard that Mosaic records was discontinuing this compilation - and having only owned 5 of Wes' 12 Riverside ablums, I decided to purchase this. My primary motivation relates to Concord Records purchasing the rights to Fantasy Records, which owned the rights to Wes' music. For years, I had received catalogs from both Fantasy and Concord; in 1998, both reissue programs were strong, and I was immediately aware of each company's instinct for preservaton when I scanned through their respective catalogs. However, over the years, Concord's catalog dwindled to next to nothing, while Fantasy (emboldened, to be sure, by the royalities from Creedence Clearwater Revival's ... Read More:
