Nomo is funky, frantic music. As such it is the perfect soundtrack for chase scenes and montages of Shaft walking down the street. Before you get offended and start to snap off an angry letter, you can't imagine what high praise that soundtrack sentence is meant to be.
The percussion wades neck deep into polyrhythms that call to mind generations of African drummers, the bass-lines rest firmly in the tradition of American funk, and everything else sticks closely to the basics of big band jazz. Nomo hit the ground already at full sprint and top quality with "Nu Tone." No build-up here, just right into things, and we hope you catch up. A deep Detroit electro-style bass line sets the pace and the horn players expend every ounce ... Read More:

First things first -- this is one of Jimmy Smith's best (maybe THE best) albums and a major jewel in the crown of Blue Note records. It's not funky in the James Brown sense, it's funky in the heaps-and-heaps-of-soul, a-groove-six-feet-deep, "What the hell is happening back at that chicken shack?" sense.
As far as groovin', bluesy B3 jazz, you really can't do better than this album. Donald Bailey has a heavy, booting swing and Jimmy Smith's chunky basslines propel the music along. Kenny Burrell's playing is beautiful here -- very subtle and tasteful, the yin to Jimmy Smith's powerful organ yang. And as far as I'm concerned, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine is lifted to deity status by his playing on this session. Saxophone playing ... Read More:

This music is just so damn tasty, it is mystical. These guys were born to play together. I agree with another reviewer about So Far Away, and Larry Carlton's guitar. I also love the trombone playing, simply because of the way he plays; the notes and phrasing he uses. Really though, it is a SUM being (even) greater than its parts phenomenon.

For me, this was immediately much more accessible than the more famous "Sugar" Album. This is most likely because this is arguably more commercial, but what a fantastic sound. I own the Trouble Man soundtrack from which the title track of this CD is drawn and it is a brilliant slow burn. This album is similar. Put it on and sit back for an evening of smooth relaxing listening. For more focussed listening you can tune in on the expertise of the great musicians whose greatness is in their subtlety. This is one CD that I know I'll be listening too for many years to come and so its money well spent.

As a long time fan of MMW, I have been disappointed with some of their post-Combustication work, but this CD has certainly revived my love of their funky hooks and fusion jazz. I play it alongside Herbie Hancock, Miles and John McLaughlin, and "End" never fails to draw me in. I especially like "Bloody Oil" and "New Planet" coming through back to back, and "Curtis" is a wonderfully uplifting tune that creeps up and then soars. The other noteworthy song is "Queen Bee" which feels like a sixties throwback and I can imagine the Doors jamming it out while Jim Morrison takes an extended break in the wings. It is more than gimmicks and hooks though as they develop their musical motifs and take chances, including some feedback that drives my more conservative wife ... Read More:

Great cd for Hammond B-3 Organ Jazz playing. But I was a little disappointed because I was expecting the song "Alligator Bogaloo" that was played on YouTube by Dr. Lonnie Smith to be the same that was on this cd. But its not. Its still a great cd, and I'm glad that I bought it. But I was still wanting the other "Alligator Bogaloo" song.
Release Date June 13, 2000
This album is groovey, but it lacks one thing, James Brown's voice. With the exception of a few tracks like "Pass the Peas" (a classic), the album is comprised of JBB funk grooves sans-James Brown. If you're looking for a straight funk album I would look elsewhere, and if you're looking for some James Brown funk, I'd buy an album with him singing on it.

The music is incredible. Really. But it is criminal how bad this recording sounds. It's advertised as remastered, but whoever did seems to have had no idea what they are doing. I know some people think remastering is not a big deal, but as an audio engineer, I can tell this would be so much more enjoyable to listen to if they actually worked a little bit on it. For example, listen to the first track and turn it way down. All you can hear is that shrill bell sound right? Now, turn it up loud enough to hear the bass (with no EQ'ing). At that volume, isn't the bell sound painfully obnoxious? Wouldn't it sound better balanced out? This is what remastering is for and this is why I'm mad that those cheap jerks for not getting it right. Maybe this stuff will be reissued right ... Read More:

Most of the recent Blue Note RVG Edition titles are reissued, remastered titles that simply have been out of print on CD for a time. By contrast, both volumes of Jimmy Smith's "Live at the Baby Grand" have never been available domestically on disc until now, a most welcome release indeed! Recorded on April 4, 1956, in the jazz hotbed (?) of Wilmington, Delaware (my birthplace, BTW), this is the organist at his raw, jaw-dropping best. You really do get the feeling that those original jazz fans and curiousity seekers must have felt when first going to a Jimmy Smith show -- the Charlie Parker of the organ, let's see what all the buzz is about! While these sessions do a marvelous job of capturing that energy, they also have their shortcomings. In order to get that great ... Read More:
