Simply stated -- this is their album that best balances depth and accessibility. Incredible grooves (as always) and a great variety of sounds make it the album I most often turn to when I'm in the mood for some MMW. You just gotta love when the drums come in on "House Mop"....

While the title is slightly misleading, as it's basically a compilation up until he signed his deal with Time Warner before "Celebration", it's a pretty good collection. It's a little heavy on the covers, but that's not entirely bad because there's no one in smooth jazz who can cover R&B classics like Norman can, and he does it well here with covers of classics like "Any Love", "After the Love Is Gone" and "For the Love of You".

I love this album, especially side two with Chain of Fools and Battle Hymn. I first heard this on a $20 portable record player outside my barracks in Nam in 1969. We played side two over and over. Imagine hearing Battle Hymn in that setting. The record player was so bad that I thought all those Larry Coryell riffs from Chain of Fools were a Saxaphone. I've still never heard a guitarist pull off those kinds of intelligent but driving arpeggios before; not your standard guitar playing. Herbie excels at grooves, not notes so he doesn't have to be some technical machine zombie. Not many jazz albums can boast such a funky groove and rhythm section. I can still get people excited about this album who don't listen to jazz and have never heard it. This ... Read More:

Before I start, all the songs on this CD are excellent songs. The actual compilation of the cd is what troubles my somewhat. I have to agree with the first reviewer in that the main focus of this CD is female vocalists rather than a good, all-around jazz mix. Verve Remix Vol. 1 did an excellent job mixing these songs, but I feel that the song selection could'be been more varied. To contradict myself, it is a good thing that they unified the theme of this CD by choosing mostly soft, slow, pure female jazz vocalists; however, using a conjoint theme isn't always the correct decision...as with this CD. I personally thing that the paramount project of Verve was thier Verve Unmixed Vol. 2, due to the fact that volume 2 contained a plethora of variegated jazz mixed that ... Read More:

Blues walk is a classic 50's hard bob/bebop recording. What sets the album apart from other albums of the same era is the subtle congo playing of Ray Barretto. While it may seem commonplace today to throw an extra percussionist in to spice things up, this was one of the first "straight ahead" bebop recordings that incorporated a congo player into an album that was not a "latin jazz" album. Further the playing of Barretto was not overwhelming, which was the key to the success of the album. The overall effect was fantastic. There is great interplay between the band, Barretto and Donaldson. Most critics would rate this as Donaldson's best overall album and I agree. He's just starting to leave a straight ahead "charlie parker" style of playing for a more soul inspired ... Read More:

I say this is his best because it is much less formulaic than his other funky attempts at hits. Also, look at the line-up. And finally, Grant Green is pushing Lee to travel uncharted waters. The title number is a knock out, and the rest of the album keeps up.
Morgan, Green, and Shorter are a great line-up and nobody gives up without a aggessive fight. This is Green and Morgan at their most progressive, skipping the boogaloo

Well-known for his superlative arranging skills for big band as well as smaller ensembles, and as a solid main-stream pianist, this recording is a
good testimonial to all of these attributes.I consider SWEET HONEY BEE to be the finest recording during his tenure at BLUE NOTE RECORDS.This sextet is polished, with some great originals by Pearson,top-shelf soloing all around, and a really superb rhythm section, with Freddie Hubbard,James Spaulding, and Joe Henderson taking full advantage of the moment.Standouts for me were the surreal qualities of 'GAS LIGHT',which merits a thoughtful and hi-calibre ...
