by: Stanley Turrentine

Release Date April 19, 1994
Turrentine, Grant Green (early on for G. Greeen too) I don't know what could've happened, but it did. Mr. T is more than a capable leader in this set; he is forceful, brave and expansive, and he and Mr. Green soar along with the talents of such a great band. I confess I got this for Mr. Green's playing and he is not overshadowed, but I have gained a healthy respect for Stanley Turrentine after this. This is it folks, live jazz at THE historic joint

Check out Grant Green's Sonny Clark Quartet work and Stanley with the Three Sounds as well.

Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys: The Golden Years of Western Swing

by: Various Artists

Release Date December 14, 1999
IF SOMEBODY PUT TOGETHER THIS COMPILATION OF SONGS FOR A MASTER'S THESIS ON THE HISTORY OF WESTERN SWING MUSIC, THEY COULDN'T HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB THAN THIS. THIS IS A FOUR CD BOX SET WITH INFORMATIVE BOOKLETS IN EACH CD WITH LOTS OF PICTURES AND BIOGRAPHICAL INFO. ADMITTEDEDLY, THE EARLIEST STUFF DOESN'T QUITE "SWING" AS MUCH AS THE LATER RECORDINGS, BUT THE MUSIC IS STILL GREAT AND IT IS INTERESTING TO HEAR HOW THE MUSIC EVOLVES OVER TIME. A BARGAIN PRICE, I HAVE A FEW BOX SETS IN THIS SERIES (THE PROPPER LABEL) AND THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC PRODUCTIONS AND VALUES. WHAT OFTEN GETS OVERLOOKED AS THAT WESTERN SWING IN MANY WAYS WAS A PRECURSOR TO ROCK AND ROLL, ALONG WITH R&B "JUMP BLUES" (AT LEAST TO MY EARS, ANYWAY).

by: Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia

Release Date October 25, 1990
OMG. I'm 52 and I didn't know. I've missed 30 years of listening to this! I've been a Dead fan since college in 1973, and I've got most of the Garcia Grisman stuff, but I never knew there was a funk/Dead collaboration (never mind funk/Dead/Reggae for "The Harder They Come". Thank goodness for the Amazon list that turned me on to this one. My pod has 8000 songs on it, but this is now on the top. Sorry not to offer a more sophisticated review, but if you are "of my generation" and you also missed this one, jump on it now. There is still time...

by: Thievery Corporation

Release Date January 29, 2002
I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Jimmy Smith

Release Date September 25, 2007
First things first -- this is one of Jimmy Smith's best (maybe THE best) albums and a major jewel in the crown of Blue Note records. It's not funky in the James Brown sense, it's funky in the heaps-and-heaps-of-soul, a-groove-six-feet-deep, "What the hell is happening back at that chicken shack?" sense.

As far as groovin', bluesy B3 jazz, you really can't do better than this album. Donald Bailey has a heavy, booting swing and Jimmy Smith's chunky basslines propel the music along. Kenny Burrell's playing is beautiful here -- very subtle and tasteful, the yin to Jimmy Smith's powerful organ yang. And as far as I'm concerned, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine is lifted to deity status by his playing on this session. Saxophone playing doesn't ... Read More:

by: Les McCann, Eddie Harris

Release Date May 01, 1990
I've been hooked on this recording since my sister wore the grooves off the original LP back in the early 1970's. I had been looking for it and as soon as it came out on CD, I bought it. "Compared to What" is an improvisational masterpiece and the lyrics still hold true today. The other reviewers have it right. Even if you don't love jazz, check this out!

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Lou Donaldson

Release Date March 25, 2008
Lou Donaldson's "Here 'Tis" is one of those Blue Notes that collectors have been pleading to have reissued for years. Primarily this is because this album marked the recorded debuts of guitarist Grant Green and organist "Baby Face" Willette. (Please note that Grant Green's First Session wasn't released until 2001 -- see my review.) While Green went on to fame, if not fortune, Willette only recorded three more sessions for Blue Note, then seemingly vanished from the music world. However, the impact of both players is strongly felt on this January 23, 1961 session, Donaldson's first using the sax-guitar-organ-drum combo (Dave Bailey is the drummer BTW). Despite the new format, Donaldson was no rookie when it came to great soul jazz, he just previously found it ... Read More:

The Electrifying Eddie Harris/Plug Me In

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Eddie Harris

Release Date November 16, 1993
I know that my title may not make since to many but back in '68 I was 13 yrs old and the best needle and cartridge you could buy was a Pickering. It came with higher end Fisher stereos. Anyway, Eddie Harris, Houston Pearson and David "Fathead" Newman were jammin' back then. Listen Here has always been my favorite tune. When I first read that Eddie had an electronic device on his sax to produce that unique sound I was hooked. I have purchased four different albums with this cut on it just to make sure I never lose it. If you really want some gritty funk jazz get " Compared to What" with Eddie and Les McCann.

The Funk Box

CD-Charts > Music > Soul-Jazz and Boogaloo
by: Various Artists - R&B/Soul - Funk

Release Date November 21, 2000
This is what's missing from most of todays sterilized corporate driven music. Its fun. Its on the edge. Its raw. But its addictively fun. You can hear James Brown directing the band in the middle of the songs with his usuall flare. You can hear musicians trying different riffs. You can be sure most tracks were recorded with a full band playing at once, getting into and changing their own groove. You can't help but move to the great baseline and rythyms. Its got that special electricity that you just don't find in most modern music. Great Great collection.
