Well if you want to know about modes and how to play them on the guitar; here it is. 92% of watchers thought this was a 5 (me included), what else can you say. The songs played some 15 years ago sound a bit dated now, but all the material is spot on and you should understand everything much better when you've seen this. If you want more on scales and how to play mode there's a very good DVD by Jimmy Bruno on the subject called "No Nonsense Jazz Guitar" that will also help you nail all the scales patteren adn the modes within. This jazz approach by Bruno will give you some real insights to what Alan Holdsworth, Satriani, Vai and Gamable are doing with their fusion playing.

This is a wonderful recording. This is required listening for any trumpet student or trumpet aficionado. Smith is one of the best- if not the best - orchestral trumpet players in the world (principal trumpet NY Philharmonic). He brings a unique artistic sensitivity as a "former" Salvation Army band trumpet player that illuminates memorable passages such as Jim Curnow's arrangement of "Amazing Grace". For me the highlight is the Ewazen "Trio". I have been very lucky to have performed both the Curnow arrangement and the Ewazen, and my inspiration was this recording. I have misplaced my CD and feel an obligation to post this small inarticulate expression of my love of this CD as I buy a new copy.

Beaut music, nice mix of trad and contemporary tunes, stylish and sensitive guitar picking, pretty good vocals i.e quality music making worth 5 stars. But at 40 mins bad value, so 3 stars. This guy's good but he's not worth his weight in gold. In fairness to Rounder customers, his first two LP albums should be on one CD. Shame on Rounder for releasing in the nineties, 20 years after they were recorded, such short CDs! Bad Rounder!

This was just a replacement copy for me; I've worn out one and landed up sharing the replacements in the past with friends who are just as taken with this as I was. It's wonderful to use as background music or just to relax with.

There are 30 selections of Renaissance instrumental music - some dances, some polyphonic fantasies, some incidental music for courty or urban celebrations. It would have been a common experience in the 15th C to hear in public places the instruments you can see "Piffaro" holding in the cover art. Piffaro means "piper", and most of their instruments are wind - the dounble reed shawms, the narrow-bore trombone, flutes and recorders. Wind players were tradesmen and guild members in the Renaissance, but they were not commonly unable to read music as some have claimed. In fact, many of the manuscripts of elegant vocal chansons that have survived were originally prepared for use by the "piffari" of Ferrara, Verona, etc. There was no wall of separation between vocal ... Peter Kater's "Piano" album is vibrant, dynamic, and very aesthetically pleasing. I am impressed with his style and level of expertise. Not all artists in this genre can provide the depth and variety that Peter Kater can. Very powerful, touching, and enjoyable. It is no surprise that he was nominated for 2 Grammy awards, one for this album. He is that good. If you love the sound of a piano in talented hands, you must have this CD.

This was my first Illenberger CD but certainly not my last. I wouldn't really call it new age, but I can understand why it is categorized as such. I would say it is more of a cross between new age and fusion jazz. This is an excellent disc, even if you are not a fan of the genre. Ralf is such a talented guitar player, writer and producer but always lets his band members shine. The great, multi-instrument playing, Budi Siebert being one of them. Every track on this disc, other than the rare Illenberger vocal track `You and I', is very good if not great. Track #10, `Quiet Morning', is one of the best music pieces I have ever heard. This disc ranks right up there with the other Illenberger discs that I own that include `Circle', `Heart and Beat', `The Gateway' and `Sedona' ... Read More:
