CD-Charts Music : The Complete Blind Willie Johnson

The Complete Blind Willie Johnson

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: Blind Willie Johnson

Release Date April 27, 1993
A passionate voice that sounds like sandpaper and glass combine with nimble slide guitar make Blind Willie Johnson one of the greatest of all bluesmen. The review below, if anything, is too meek--Blind Willie Johnson's music blows the pants off anything Robert Johnson ever did. The only reason I can think Robert gets so much attention is because Eric Clapton never listened to real blues.
The only negative I can think of is that he duets with a female singer on some of the tracks, and it detracts from the overall performance. The man was a phenomenal singer, why ruin it by throwing in another voice?

by: Chris Whitley, Jeff Lang

Release Date April 03, 2007
its a real sound. nowadays its getting harder and harder to find the authentic sound, raw, the real stuff, and this is it. Its at a different level than the mainstream stuff. Musically inspiring, relaxing. Chris was a great talent, who always kept it alive. thanks Chris, the blues is a great sound, is a great feeling.

The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East 3/71

by: Allman Brothers Band

Release Date November 25, 1997
In fact, this was the first DVD Audio I purchased; didn't even know what I was doing. I'd had a DVD player about 2 weeks, and when I found out they were doing DTS surround for audio only, I had to find something, and this was the 1st release I found. I did not hesitate...Fillmore East is STILL one of my favorite albums.

I never had the quad LP, but evidently that is the mix that was used to create this. It no doubt would have been better if they had gone back to the multi-tracks to create a new surround mix, but budgets are budgets. All things considered, this is a wonder to hear. The output isn't very high, so you'll have to turn it up...come on, use some of that amp! Also, it's true that the guitars are in the rear speakers (and ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Electric Mud

Electric Mud

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: Muddy Waters

Release Date November 19, 1996
Muddy is always great but this CD is a little sad. I bought it when it first came out and it was disappionting then. I think it an attempt to cash in on white performers sucess with "electric" versions of classic blues tunes. The fuzz-tone guitars are just out of place with Muddy's robust blues voice. It has some historical value given the unique nature of the collaboration but other than that forget it. For the real thing get "Mississippi Muddy Waters" a great live album with Pinetop Perkins and Johnny Winter. It's 100 proof.

CD-Charts Music : At the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room

At the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings

Release Date August 23, 2005
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this ... Read More:

Chicken Skin Music

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: Ry Cooder

Release Date October 25, 1990
This is one of my favorite albums from all time. I haven't thought about it for a while, but something recently clicked on how I really dug this work. I was in high school at the time, and I used to play the songs on an old boom box at work. One of the older gentlemen was amazed that a young person was listening to such old music (the album was made in 1976, but all the songs are quite old), and he asked why. I said "I just like it. That's enough".

It is Ry's best album, and it's really a collection of beautiful, timeless American folk songs. There really isn't a bad one in the whole batch. I really like the songs Always Life Him Up and He'll Have to Go. They are beautifully rendered. But the best ones have to be the opener and closer, ... Read More:

Bad to the Bone (25th Anniversary)

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: George Thorogood & the Destroyers

Release Date August 14, 2007
Has it been 25 years already? Damn! Despite several albums prior to this one, Bad to the Bone is the one that put Thorogood and company on the map. It was an unlikely success too because the group really defied what was hot at the time. No one else was delivering dirty bar band blues like Thorogood. No one else was crafting two and three chord progressions that made you want to pound down the beers and fight either. The album's title track is legendary, but the album is so much more than that.

"Back to Wentzille" is classic up-beat blues, while "Blue Highway" is the best of the slow jams. Each track contains the heart and soul of the blues while telling a mini-story in-between. For this release, the group includes re-recorded versions of six cuts ... Read More:

Move It on Over

CD-Charts > Music > Slide Guitar
by: George Thorogood & the Destroyers

Release Date October 25, 1990
Along with his self-titled debut album, George Thorogood's second one, MOVE IT ON OVER, helped to bring rock & roll back to its roots. "Move It On Over" and "Who Do You Love?" got all the airplay on rock radio, but even better was a cover of Chuck Berry's "It Wasn't Me", which really rocked harder than anything this side of Ted Nugent. If you buy this album and the first one, you're off to a good start at getting to know George Thorogood.
