Better Than the Rest, which is repackaged here, was a demo Thorogood submitted to MCA Records, before he was signed to Rounder. MCA decided not to sign him, but somehow maintained control of the rights. And when Thorogood became the most popular artist, by far, in the history of Rounder, MCA tried to cash in by releasing the demo they had. Not too many people knew about the record, even those who knew about "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," were unaware of this it seems, and I have no idea how I got my copy. But whatever, I'm glad I got it, coz it's great. The version of "You're Gonna Miss Me"--solo acoustic bottleneck--is the best version I've ever heard, anyone, anywhere. "Nadine" more than does justice ... Read More:

Not five straight stars, though...partly because the authentic Mississippi Delta stuff is interspersed with much more urban sounds from B.B. King and Albert King. And (very) electric Chicago-sides by Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, and Robert Nighthawk do much to blur the distinctiveness of this package.
But there's nothing wrong with the music itself. Delta legends Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Son House are here, doing "Rattlesnake Blues", the eerie "Crossroads Blues" and the harsh "Preachin' The Blues" respectively. Muddy Waters' late-40s single "I Feel Like Going Home" is one of his finest early songs. And the awesome (and sadly underrated) Tommy Johnson is represented by two of his best and most impressive songs, "Big Road ... Read More:

Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a new blues lover, this CD brings your listening pleasure to new peaks. This collection of nearly 80 minutes of blues tunes effectively brings together some of today's stars (Clapton, Cray) with past blues legends (Waters, Hooker).
If you're looking for some mood background music or some tunes to be a hit of the party...you need not look any further because Millennium Blues Party is your answer. Fact is...I'm not sure you can find a better mix of blues artists elsewhere!

Dan is correct!
Do not buy.
Instead get "The Offical Johhny Winter Bootleg Series".
All 3 are great. Each one gets better and better.
Vol 1 seems to be The 1979 Woddstock Reunion in Long Island.
Vol 2 has a killer version of Red House - it's worth it just for that!
Vol 3 has a killer version of Boothill, and a killer acoustic cut.

Before Robert Johnson there was an older generation of Delta blues musicians of which Charlie Patton was a part. Patton, with his rough voice and primitive sound, may take getting used to for some. But I find him to be among the most poweful of all the bluesmen. His music is rhythmically charged and his lyrics are funny, emotional and very smart. He cleverly takes on the role of a bo weavil addressing his wife in "Bo Weavil Blues" and the desperate voice of a drug addict in "A Spoonful Blues". But my favorite has to be "Down The Dirt Road Blues", where he travels with his woman to the "Indian Nation" in Oklahoma. Patton was apparently 1/4 Cherokee and hoped to obtain a place on the reservation. But instead he ends up alone and full of despair. ... Read More:

the title of this CD is misleading. The songs on this CD are taken from two albums, "The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions", and "Fathers And Sons", a Muddy Waters LP, both released in the early 70's. I have both of the orignial albums on vinyl, and they have more songs and are better sound quality. None of the songs on this CD have Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters playing together. But the songs are good.

I disagree with other reviewers who rate this album as inferior to other HDT releases. This album captures the live spirit of HDT's performance the best of any.
And live performance is what it's all about.
Chicago Blues, for me, is all about the spirit of Maxwell Street: throw an extension cord out a window, or run power from a generator and compete with the flea market atmosphere to attract a crowd. Showmanship and ingenuity were a premium and HDT had them in spades.
Sure Elmore James, Howlin Wolf & Muddy Waters were the innovators, and their catalogs are the pantheon, but THIS is the spirit of Chicago blues. Ragged, Raw, High Energy, Live!

"Who Do You Love" is a summary of George Thorogood's early work with the Rounder label. This disk can be seen as sort of a companion piece to the "The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers". There are only three cuts which overlap the other set. "Who Do You Love", "Move It On Over" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". While "Who Do You Love" does not contain any of Thorogood's originals like "Bad To The Bone" the disk contains a number of high energy cover tunes. In addition only 5 (9 if you consider the live versions on "Anthology") of the versions of tunes on this 16 tune set are found on the "Anthology" two disk set. Aside from the aforementioned ...
