This was the first in the yearly Grammy Nominees compilations. These are the best songs from their respective categories. A good collection of rock, r&b and pop. These compilations are best to listen to a few years after their release, because during the year they come out, the songs get so much airplay you soon tire of them. At least I do. But now, 7 years after this release, this album is once again good to listen to. (Could do without "balls-in-a-vice-grip" Bolton though)

This is the Allman Brothers Band doing what they do best, play live. Great versions of "Rockin' Horse" and "Desdemona", not to mention the 1-2 punch of "Melissa" and "Midnight Rider". Closing the show there's a smoking version o "Layla" sung by Mr. Haynes, that also provides a top-notch slide-guitar work to the song that would make Duane proud. You can't go wrong here.

GOD, I LOVE THIS CD!! It is truly alive, in a way most other live or studio recordings cannot even come close to. It showcases extremely high-energy live performances from almost twenty different Chicago-based or Chicago-visiting blues acts between about 1980 and 2000. These are great songs performed by great blues artists, some of them funny and high-spirited, all of them raw and electrifying. This is one of those rare CDs that is unrelentingly excellent and sparkles and crackles with energy all the way through. Alligator Records offers a number of really good blues collections of acts that have come through Chicago, but I'd say this one is the best of all. [That claim is based on a familiarity with both Alligator's other compilation CDs and several ... Read More:

To me, after the 70's Johnny sort of hit a wall. Wasn't too crazy about his 80's stuff (hey, it was the 80's. Besides the NBA, pretty much everything sucked). But this cd kicks a**!! Sugaree, Illustrated Man, You're Humbuggin' Me--really good. Medicine Man--one of his best recordings ever. Talk about some top-notch stuff!! This one, though not quite up there with the first two CBS records, is absolutely a must-have for Johnny fans. Nice, stripped down production. It's like they just got some good levels in the studio and went to town.

Short & sweet, fat & raw, all the elements of the Blues at it's best. This is Muddy Waters as he saw himself..a Blues legend at center stage & why not. I have this on vinyl & cd. Buy it, play it. Now ain't that a man !
Release Date May 18, 2004
The last of Muddy Waters' four Blue Sky albums is often considered the least as well, but you wouldn't know it listening to this superbly remastered and expanded reissue.
Originally issued in 1981, "King Bee" was recorded at a time when Muddy Waters, then 65, was slowing down because of health problems, and his band was losing money because they were gigging less, finally causing them to quit en masse.
Guitarist Bob Margolin's candid liner notes are much more brief and a lot less jolly than the warm and often humorous mini-essays he wrote for the reissues of "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready", and while his fondness for Muddy Waters is very obvious, it is equally obvious that he did not have a good time recording this album, Muddy Waters' last.

Muddy says 'The Blues Had a Baby And They Called It Rock And Roll.' Then, he let's us know, he's a man, not a 'Mannish Boy.' With James Cotton on harp. Muddy Waters is truly the M-A-N. All this leads up to the Muddy Mississippi 'LIVE' Now, that's 5 stars
Release Date April 05, 2004
First of all, they're both great. Where this album gets 5 stars, the Sony one would get 4. The main reason that I like this one over the Sony is because it has the original 29 on one disc. The Sony spreads it out over 2 discs, and (here's the annoying part) puts the alternate take right after the original take (I thought about even livening it up by having several comedians (Like Cheech Marin, Bobcat Goldthwait, Steve Martin, etc.) make comments like "One More Time !!!" between the takes). The sound quality of this is a A LOT better than the Sony. Either the Noise Reduction was improved, or Proper had much better originals.
Let me put it this way. If you want to study RJ's method, and listen for subtle differences, get the Sony. If you want it for entertainment ... Read More:
