Pick this one up right away, to hear country acoustic blues the way it was meant to be played. Several great things about this particular recording: great fidelity, both straight acoustic and a lot of brilliant slide playing, features Johnny only--voice and guitar. This is a guy who ran with Robert Johnson, folks. And I would have to say he is better than Robert in terms of singing and playing. His voice is so powerful and moving, and his guitar work is second to none.

1979's 'Muddy Waters Live' is a real treat. It features another blues icon, Johnny Winter's backing band, as well as Muddy's raw and unique voice.
While this was released on Columbia, and his best sides were on Chess, which was purchased by MCA (now Geffen), this is still a supreme live set. If you enjoyed 'Live At Newport,' than you will absolutely love 'Muddy Waters Live.' He is considerably older, but older can mean better.
And in this case, it means better. The first song on the record, his hit 'Mannish Boy' is probably better than the studio version; while the final song on this album 'Deep Down In Florida' just brings the whole house down. The guitar licks on that one are superb.

This CD makes the perfect introduction to Mississippi Fred. He was a fine, interesting blues artist and it is easily worth the money.

To be honest, I'd have to give this whole concert only 4 stars since I don't like some of the songs much at all, but I created a playlist that's about the length of one CD that is all outstanding tunes, so I give the set five stars. First of all, I should say that I've been a Dickey Betts fan since the early 70s, and still go to see him frequently. Secondly, the series of numbers I think are absolutely first rate are Little Martha > Steady Rolling Man > Change My Way of Living > Donna Maria > Having a Good Time > Ramblin' Man > No One To Run With > Seven Turns > Jessica. As far as the band goes, I think all of the guys playing with him are excellent. I think if you get the collection, you'll find at least that the songs I list are great, and you ... Read More:
Rolling Stone (3/9/95, p.64) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Over a nearly 30-year career...Richard Thompson has established himself as a guitar virtuoso and extraordinary songwriter. BEAT THE RETREAT contains some energized renditions of his material..."
Q (11/94, p.126) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...The range of performers involved here underlines the reach of Thompson's art....BEAT THE RETREAT achieves a continuity of mood that places it above most `tribute' albums..."
Dirty Linen (12/94-1/95, p.62) - "...BEAT THE RETREAT shows just how much a great song can ignite the creative spark within even the most mainstream artists..."
Option (3-4/95, p.93) - "...does justice to a darkly masterful songwriter and guitarist..."

I just listened to this recording and i have to say i was very impressed, several of the live tunes have a more jazz flavored tempo due to the excellent work of longtime Stones pianist Chuck Leavell. The high points include Elizabeth Reed, Southbound and Jessica all delivered with skill by the brothers lineup at the time. With D. Betts doing all the guitar work and the added keyboard the listener experiences a tight 6 man unit delivering the tunes with the skill and precision that the ABB are known for. I don't understand the critical reviews of this CD as the performances are top notch and the song selection is fine.

Universal Music just keep re-releasing the same songs these days without considering the out-takes and live stuff that linger in the vaults.
This set of songs are the best from the original line up with a few other tracks from other incarnations after Duane Allman & Berry died.
If you don't have any Allman Brothers CDs then get this one. If you have them all like me don't bother.
He says that this is his blending of American Gospel with his Indian Raga Blues. I didn't know what to expect, but the "gospel" sound is only really strong on one song (Sittin' on Top of the World, done in a light upbeat way). What is noticable, is the lyrics seem more upfront here. While Harry plays his usual tasteful mix of Lap Slide Guitar, Mohan Veena, Banjo, Harmonica and Tamboura, he also utilizes female backup vocals (rich and beautiful), keyboards, and tabla and other percussions, but puts these all backseat to supporting the songs. The result is a pop/R&B sound like Van Morrison at his mellow best. The instrumental fills are more Indian sounding (Mohan Veena slide and Tabla). These are spiritual blues or ... Read More:

Imagine, it is 1931 and Robert Johnson comes home to Robert Lockwood Jr.'s home in Helena bringing a young man who calls himself "W. M." (actually, if you pushed him young Alex "Rice" Miller would have told you that he was "Willie Miller" actually his brother's name. Robert, Robert Jr. and Sonny Boy live on the Helena, Arkansas side of the Mississippi River. By the late 1930s W. M. now calling himself "Sonny Boy" and Robert Jr. are playing electric guitar and harmonica through car radios and juke boxes. Later they would call it "Chicago Blues." In 1941, Sonny Boy began a radio show on a new radio station KFFA in Helena and soon invited the now recording artist Robert Lockwood Jr. to join him. King Biscuit Time took the delta by storm as it was the only radio show in the area ... Read More:

A definitive album! It features songs by Johnny Shines and Johnny Young, both backed by Big Walter Horton (who takes center stage once, with Charlie Musselwhite on second harp, to blow the instrumental Rockin' My Boogie). These are some of the best recordings you'll find by any of these artists.
Horton is absolutely magnificent. There is no harp-man that gets a tone quite as full as Horton's, and he is at his best on this album. One listen will prove why this lesser-known bluesman is considered one of the Chicago harp masters along-side Little Walter and Sonny Boy. The first three notes he blows on Black Spider Blues will pierce your heart.
You will also be hard-pressed to find Johnny Shines sounding any better than he does here. It is not ... Read More:
