HALF A BOY HALF A MAN by GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS is a no nonsense slab of rock and roll the way it should be. There are no gimmicks or flashiness, GT lets his guitar do all the talking for him. This album totally rocks and will be enjoyed by all music fans. I think out of the 11 songs on the album, the only one that doesnt cut the mustard to me is AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU. It is a good song, I just think the the vocal quality isnt up to par. If you need to know which songs are the best, I DONT TRUST NOBODY, 99 DAYS IN JAIL, JUST PASSIN THRU, DOUBLE SHOT and the title track are enough reasons why to purchase this album. I highly recommend this song for the serious music fan.

Universal Music just keep re-releasing the same songs these days without considering the out-takes and live stuff that linger in the vaults.
This set of songs are the best from the original line up with a few other tracks from other incarnations after Duane Allman & Berry died.
If you don't have any Allman Brothers CDs then get this one. If you have them all like me don't bother.

This album, the best in studio of the great "guitar - god albino" johnny winter, is amazing....! good mix of songs ...pop...blinded by love....and funk ... .feedback.......on highway......with the rock and rool.......thirty days.....stray cat blues....riot in cell block 9.....bony maronie....
He says that this is his blending of American Gospel with his Indian Raga Blues. I didn't know what to expect, but the "gospel" sound is only really strong on one song (Sittin' on Top of the World, done in a light upbeat way). What is noticable, is the lyrics seem more upfront here. While Harry plays his usual tasteful mix of Lap Slide Guitar, Mohan Veena, Banjo, Harmonica and Tamboura, he also utilizes female backup vocals (rich and beautiful), keyboards, and tabla and other percussions, but puts these all backseat to supporting the songs. The result is a pop/R&B sound like Van Morrison at his mellow best. The instrumental fills are more Indian sounding (Mohan Veena slide and Tabla). ... Read More:

Imagine, it is 1931 and Robert Johnson comes home to Robert Lockwood Jr.'s home in Helena bringing a young man who calls himself "W. M." (actually, if you pushed him young Alex "Rice" Miller would have told you that he was "Willie Miller" actually his brother's name. Robert, Robert Jr. and Sonny Boy live on the Helena, Arkansas side of the Mississippi River. By the late 1930s W. M. now calling himself "Sonny Boy" and Robert Jr. are playing electric guitar and harmonica through car radios and juke boxes. Later they would call it "Chicago Blues." In 1941, Sonny Boy began a radio show on a new radio station KFFA in Helena and soon invited the now recording artist Robert Lockwood Jr. to join him. King Biscuit Time took the delta by storm as it was the ... Read More:

the title of this CD is misleading. The songs on this CD are taken from two albums, "The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions", and "Fathers And Sons", a Muddy Waters LP, both released in the early 70's. I have both of the orignial albums on vinyl, and they have more songs and are better sound quality. None of the songs on this CD have Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters playing together. But the songs are good.

This album is a gem--prior to the advent of CDs, I think I wore out 5 or 6 copies of this album on vinyl, and I've kept them all--even the old, worn-out ones. The Allman Brothers Band are often compared with the Dead, but at their best, IMO, they were far better--tighter, more disciplined, even while they were playing "out there." Unlike the Dead's jams, which often seemed chaotic and pointless, under Duane's leadership, the Allman Brothers' jams were more like controlled fire. As good as the rest of the tracks on Eat A Peach are, the second half of the Mountain Jam is for me, the perfect display of Duane Allman's compositional and melodic genius on guitar. After Berry Oakley's bass solo leads into the entire group coming together, Duane lays down ... Read More:

I disagree with other reviewers who rate this album as inferior to other HDT releases. This album captures the live spirit of HDT's performance the best of any.
And live performance is what it's all about.
Chicago Blues, for me, is all about the spirit of Maxwell Street: throw an extension cord out a window, or run power from a generator and compete with the flea market atmosphere to attract a crowd. Showmanship and ingenuity were a premium and HDT had them in spades.
Sure Elmore James, Howlin Wolf & Muddy Waters were the innovators, and their catalogs are the pantheon, but THIS is the spirit of Chicago blues. Ragged, Raw, High Energy, Live!

Better Than the Rest, which is repackaged here, was a demo Thorogood submitted to MCA Records, before he was signed to Rounder. MCA decided not to sign him, but somehow maintained control of the rights. And when Thorogood became the most popular artist, by far, in the history of Rounder, MCA tried to cash in by releasing the demo they had. Not too many people knew about the record, even those who knew about "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," were unaware of this it seems, and I have no idea how I got my copy. But whatever, I'm glad I got it, coz it's great. The version of "You're Gonna Miss Me"--solo acoustic bottleneck--is the best version I've ever heard, anyone, anywhere. "Nadine" more than does justice to the Berry ... Read More:
