"Blind" Willie Johnson has a voice which will reach through the decades, grab you by the shirt and shake you, and most insistently dictate your rapt attention. The strong and gravelly voice of Johnson is comparable probably only to Son House's early Paramount recordings. And while some of the songs on this album can definitely be categorized in the blues genre, many fall much more into the gospel genre, if that is even of importance when discussing one of the great early names in pre-war blues and American music history.
Willie Johnson is not a well known name of a Robert Johnson....not even close. To his credit, Eric Clapton and others have brought new people into the blues genre because of their accolades of Robert Johnson; the ... Read More:

This cd has multiple personality disorder. Played at normal, quiet levels, it is a good, but not superb recording featuring lots of good slide guitar work from what sounds like an interesting, innovative guitarist.
Turn up the volume loud, and the brilliance of Hole's playing really starts to shine through. There is a subtle resonance that is simultaneously sweet and sour that shines through at higher volume levels. The two best tracks on this cd are Jenny Lee (appears on Alligator's 30th Anniversary CD - a very good collection by the way) and an excellent version of BB King and Canned Heat's You Move Me So.
If Hole is touring within a two-day drive of your home, go see him live (unfortunately, he is presently finishing ... Read More:

Johnny Winter has been a favorite of mine since I started learning how to play guitar in the late 1970's and this album has some great guitar work on it. My favorite track has to be Talk is Cheap. It's got a great rhythm section and great guitar work from Winter. There are other noteworthy songs including The Crawl, Sittin' in the Jailhouse & Rollin' Tumblin' but Talk is Cheap has made this one of my top Winter selections for years. It does not equal the Alligator releases but has good energy. Difficult to find in modern formats though.

This soundtrack was an education in the blues for Warming By The Devil's Fire, a movie where a 12-year old sent down to Mississippi to be baptized by one uncle, is instead picked up by his fun-loving Uncle Buddy, who educates him in the blues and takes him around, showing him what he is supposed to be saved from. The majority of songs here carry through the theme in the movie that gospel and blues were separate, one being more divine, the other seen as the devil's music. That changed when artists like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke made soul music as a combination of the two. Highlights:
Among the earliest tracks on here is "See See Rider" from the Mother of the Blues herself, Ma Rainey, the power in her voice apparent despite ... Read More:

I finally understand the fuzz about Duane. I have only occasionally heard his guitar playing on different albums - but never owned an album myself. I have 300+ blues albums with all of the greats Howlin, Muddy, Buddy, the Kings, T-Bone among many others. I feel so bad for never really digging into Duane until now. He's playing is fantastic and this album is a sure treat. I am happy happy happy :o)

HALF A BOY HALF A MAN by GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS is a no nonsense slab of rock and roll the way it should be. There are no gimmicks or flashiness, GT lets his guitar do all the talking for him. This album totally rocks and will be enjoyed by all music fans. I think out of the 11 songs on the album, the only one that doesnt cut the mustard to me is AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU. It is a good song, I just think the the vocal quality isnt up to par. If you need to know which songs are the best, I DONT TRUST NOBODY, 99 DAYS IN JAIL, JUST PASSIN THRU, DOUBLE SHOT and the title track are enough reasons why to purchase this album. I highly recommend this song for the serious music fan.
