Some of the songs on this cd are very good , and though not like the Hound Dogs version are still good .. Am I the only one who reviewed this who doesn't think that Sonny Landreth smokes his cut ? It doesn't sound anything like the original , but Sonny is an entirely different guitarist ..

Johnny Winter has been a favorite of mine since I started learning how to play guitar in the late 1970's and this album has some great guitar work on it. My favorite track has to be Talk is Cheap. It's got a great rhythm section and great guitar work from Winter. There are other noteworthy songs including The Crawl, Sittin' in the Jailhouse & Rollin' Tumblin' but Talk is Cheap has made this one of my top Winter selections for years. It does not equal the Alligator releases but has good energy. Difficult to find in modern formats though.

Nice introduction to bluesman Elmore James! The liner notes emphasize his important role in the development of the blues. He died way too early, at 45, because of heart trouble.
His vocals were strong, with a straight out blues sound; his guitar playing was exceptional, too. The liner notes that that "". . .it was Elmore and his signature crashing licks that sliced the deepest and influenced the most from the moment he recorded his first immortal treatment of `Dust My Broom.'"
And so it makes sense to talk a bit of that iconic song. "Dust My Broom" was one of his great hits (the liner notes suggest that he adopted the song's sensibility from Robert Johnson. The guitar sound is classic blues. Sonny Boy Williamson (II) does ... Read More:

Eternal thanks to Thomas Edison for inventing recording when he did because, had it been delayed for many more years, much of what you hear in this magnificent 1990 release from Sony/Columbia, which presents artists ranging from legends to the virtually unknown, may well have been just a dim memory.
Those that fall into the legend category are immediately recognizable, led by the master of the 12-string guitar (he could also play the accordion and concertina, violin, piano, mandolin, and harp or harmonica) Huddie William Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly (or Leadbelly as he is sometimes listed). Born in January, 1888, he left behind an extensive catalogue of Folk standards when he died on December 6, 1949, including this previously-lost version ... Read More:

I waited almost a year after buying this to write a review.
Johnny has been my favorite musician since I was in high school. I've been listening to his music and going to his shows since 1973 and have just about all his authorized CD's. I bought this one with some anticipation (and trepidation) after seeing the last two live shows I've been to. I was excited about a new release after such a long wait, but wondered how it would measure up after the last two shows I had seen. They had their magical moments, but overall they were disappointing because of Johnny's physical decline, with weak vocals and to a lesser extent, sloppy playing. It's possible that I hit two "off" shows, but after this album, I'm not so sure.

He was born Booker T. Washington White (Bukka became his name due to a mistake in one of his recording sessions many years later) in 1909, and had a career lasting until 1977. His first recording session was in 1930; he didn't make much of an impression since he did not record anything else until 1937. This CD features his early recordings, made in 1930, 1937, 1939, and 1940.
The liner notes identify him as one of the early greats, the end of the line of blues players originating with Charley Patton and Son House (with Tommy Johnson thrown in for good measure). From this early generation came later well know blues players such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
Anyhow, what about his craft and his art? Three cuts illustrate:
