Living In Oblivion : The 80's Greatest Hits, Vol. 4

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: Various Artists

Release Date October 04, 1994
If you want to get that old 80s groove on at home in your button up, long sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and underwear, then this is a must have. In fact the serious (5 CD Set) is chalk full of all those one-hit wonders of the 80s along with a few of the main stream artists of that time like Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, etc...
Those of you in your 30s to low 40s will live this CD and its companions. I recommend getting them all to add to any 80s collection. It beats buying each individual artest.

Dreams of Freedom: Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub

by: Bob Marley

Release Date September 23, 1997
Marley tracks without Bob Marley singing, is what this CD is all about. If the listeners haven't been exposed to the dub sound it may not be for them. Overall, I enjoy the dub sound so it fits into the reggae that I listen to. Definitely cool out music to chill to. But nothing compares to singing and messages of Bob.

Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: Reel Big Fish

Release Date August 22, 2006
I saw RBF live at a Warped Tour back in the mid 90s and fell in love with them, life as opposed to on CD. I always wanted something to listen to in my car (they did the House of Blues DVD) and they just never seemed to put one out. So, when their record company screwed them over, they released this CD which is probably the best piece of music I own. Of course, what makes this great is the energy. You can tell that some bands play concerts out of obligation. I think these guys would rather do concerts than anything else. Nothing beats the comedy in between the songs. Classic album from the best band in the world.

by: Culture

Release Date July 17, 2007
Before purchasing this album, I'd not heard Culture since I was in college. A buddy of mine used to spin a couple of their discs of which this, I now know, was one. I can do without the five bonus tracks which are basically remixes of selections from the primary track list that I'll probably never listen to again. But the core album itself is really slammin' from start to finish. Very solid, upbeat and still quite fresh sounding. The liner notes and photos in the booklet that comes with this 30-anniversary edition are enjoyable too. If you're a reggae fan, you won't be disappointed by this record.

Life Won't Wait

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: Rancid

Release Date June 30, 1998
Rancid hasn't released anything since this album that I can stand... but this album is them at their best and their most varied. Whereas "Let's Go" is a straight forward punk record and "Out Come the Wolves" is more ska influenced, "Life Won't Wait" is varied. There's punk, ska, big band almost horns on a couple songs... there's a real gritty Chicago-style harmonica present... most every song here is great. This album is the high water mark.

Sounding a Mosaic

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: Bedouin Soundclash

Release Date May 10, 2005
To start, there isn't a band making such heartfelt, intricate music as these three Canadians. In fact, their three-album repertoire, embellished tremendously by 2007's "Street Gospels," is as moving and legitimate as the first albums by the Clash. That says a great deal, but not enough about what Bedouin Soundclash has added to the international culture. It reminds me of a Haitian friend who grew up listening to Bob Marley without ever understanding the words; he just felt the rhythm and power manifested in the sound and knew it was crucial. This too is crucial music, and does not fear shifting styles throughout the recordings.
From the tender "12:59 Lullaby" to the psychedelic "Jealousy," Jay Malinowski injects the voice of a renegade rasta into the reggae, ska, calypso and ... Read More:

by: Smash Mouth

Release Date July 08, 1997
This Album never claimed to be Punk. Especailly that crap punk from the 70s and 80s. It never claimed to be the Sex pistols or the ramones (and if you like them, kill yourself because that bland horrific fecal matter excrement is not music). It never claimed to be Britney Spears! It never claimed to be anything, other than what the muscians intended. Music THEY liked. Their Ska/Punk influences and tastes definately show here, as people most oftenly misenterpret this venture to BE a Punk album. It is not, it is pop/rock. Sure, the guitars may sound Punk at times as well the drums, but the heart here is either Party, or Post-Teen Angst. Mad about Landlords? Try whining about that young skinny unemployed sex pistols living on the street.

Anyway, it bothers that people dont understand ... Read More:

Exodus

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: Bob Marley & the Wailers

Release Date October 16, 2001
Exodus (the movement of JAH People) was time magazine's album of the century, that should say enough right there. But if you are not convinced buy it and you will be for sure. This album was released in 1977, and was recorded in London England. Bob Marley and members of the band survived an attempted assination in December of 1976, and went into self imposed exile in London. Here the creativity of the band is quite good, and many of the Songs that you know by Bob Marley and the Wailers appear on this disc. Jamming, Exodus, One Love, Three Little Birds, and Waiting In Vain. All the tracks are great on this disc and you can hear for the first time in all of the Wailers recordings that the quality of the recording equipment here is much better. The dummer's (Carlton Barrett) high hat never came through ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Ska
by: The Slackers

Release Date April 29, 2008
I was extremely disappointed in the last slackers album, "Peculiar." I thought the departure of Mark Lynn meant the end of the Slackers and the beginning of another typical ska band, but this album is a return to pure excellence. Ska is a difficult genre to stay fresh in, because there is only so much you can do with a horns + offbeat rhythms characterizing your music. However, the Slackers have never been a typical band and they are highly capable of being admired by non-ska enthusiasts because of the way the band infuses so many different genres. This album has not forgotten it's roots, however, the sound has definitely evolved from the early Slackers formula. There was something lacking in "Peculiar," but it has made a triumphant return to this album. It is well worth your money and time.
