This album is an experience and I think it's nothing short of a masterpiece. I didn't care for it at first, but it grew on me the more I became open to it. There are so many different layers of sound and meaning on each track. Listening with earphones heightens ones experience.

Shawn Colvin has always been a rather charming artist of smart sentiments and pleasant arrangements - it leads to lovely, not especially challenging songs, and a general feeling of goodwill towards Colvin. I'm a fan, I suppose, but I'd never think of her as one of the great "artists" of her time. I suppose that's still the case after These Four Walls, but I did find myself compelled to buy it, and, a good year and a half after purchasing it, it strikes me that I still listen to the songs regularly, and that there's not a clunker in the bunch. "Fill Me Up" begins the set with charming guitar and a vulnerable, winning melody, and "These Four Walls" capitalizes on it with rather lovely anxiety. Throughout the records, though, Colvin seems to be on a ... Read More:

This is an absolute MUST for the true Harry Chapin fan. Listening to the two disc CD took me back to the times I saw Harry and the band perform live many years ago. An absolute joy!

After the demise of the Mamas & Papas in 1968, and the recording of their contractual obligation album People Like Us in 1971, Papa John Phillips embarked on a commercially ill-fated solo career. His debut, 1969's John, The Wolf King of L.A., found Phillips forgoing the careful orchestrations and perfectly arranged harmonies of his former group, replacing naïve summer-of-love visions with more jaundiced visions. Critically lauded, the album stirred little commercial interest. Unable to find a starring role as a solo artist, Phillips turned to film, penning soundtracks for Brewster McCloud and Myra Breckinridge. He returned to solo sessions in the early 1970s, augmenting his Wrecking Crew regulars with members of the Crusaders, Traffic, and Mothers of ... Read More:

When I heard this CD for the first time I was really impressed. Lyrics and music are perfectly matched. That's one of best female voices I've ever heard!!!

I heard of Gillian Welch through the "O Brother" movie and soundtrack (one of the "sirens"), and began to listen to cuts off some of her CDs. At first, I didn't listen to this one because her other CDs had higher ratings overall in the reviews. But, when I decided to listen, I was immediately hooked. I bought the CD and haven't been disappointed in the least. As a matter of fact, this one grows on me the more I hear it. Gillian has a "lazy" style on this that is perfect for those moody-weather days (or any others for that fact). She combines "old-time", "new grass" and "blues-flavor" in a modern, acoustic (except for one song) fashion that is addictive. I hope she does more work like this CD!

In Matters of the Heart, Chapman delves into profound topics, as always, using wonderful imagery in describing home life, sadness, and dreams (both the sleeping and yearning kind). It was beautifully created and produced in ways similar to albums by Suzanne Vega. "Open Arms" (not a re-make of the Journey song of the same name) is touching and powerful, and is another example of her music about home and family. "Dreaming on a World" is an anthem of hope for the world. One wonders if Chapman's original title included "of a world" before she changed it to "on a world" to give it another dimension of meaning. The title song is completely sincere and shows vulnerability more powerful than most songs about aggression or determination. This is an album that will ... Read More:

This was a CD purchased for my husband. As he already has it in a cassette and wanted to get a CD of it, I would assume that it is a favorite of his and that he would recommend it highly.
