Shawn Colvin has always been a rather charming artist of smart sentiments and pleasant arrangements - it leads to lovely, not especially challenging songs, and a general feeling of goodwill towards Colvin. I'm a fan, I suppose, but I'd never think of her as one of the great "artists" of her time. I suppose that's still the case after These Four Walls, but I did find myself compelled to buy it, and, a good year and a half after purchasing it, it strikes me that I still listen to the songs regularly, and that there's not a clunker in the bunch. "Fill Me Up" begins the set with charming guitar and a vulnerable, winning melody, and "These Four Walls" capitalizes on it with rather lovely anxiety. i came across the song (let the mystery be )last week and fell in love with this artists work i was was so impressed with the lyrics i started researching the composer witch led me to miss DeMent.not only does she write the stuff but sings it as well and it's real homespun folk music and as good as hank william,tammy wynette ,etc . i found the album infamous angel and it's hard to believe it was released 15 years ago but i guess you don't get much play on the radio for folk music even if its as high a caliber as this ,in fact the only place you get to hear folk music is on PBS. mostly the great old timers but i don't know how they could have missed this lady some of her stuff is so pleasing to listen to (sweet is the melody and childhood memories ... Coming from Scotland , I'd never heard of John Hiatt before and discovered him by accident . I heard "Have a Little Faith in me" and was stunned and ordered his "Best of" and it's fantastic ! Now I had to find out that he wrote "Thing Called Love" and "Angel Eyes" and he sings them better than the well-known versions and his music is just great.
This guy rocks !

As a singer-songwriter, Lyle Lovett is known for his "class, charisma and consistency." He has mastered the art of blending folk, big-band swing, blues, jazz, country, and gospel in his music, while riding dirt bikes and tangling with bulls in Texas in his spare time. His 1989 release, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, hooked me with its bluesy opening track, The Blues Walk, and then sealed the deal with Lovett's cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" (included in the soundtrack of the movie The Crying Game) and the cynicism of "I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You." This album is an experience and I think it's nothing short of a masterpiece. I didn't care for it at first, but it grew on me the more I became open to it. There are so many different layers of sound and meaning on each track. Listening with earphones heightens ones experience.

I heard of Gillian Welch through the "O Brother" movie and soundtrack (one of the "sirens"), and began to listen to cuts off some of her CDs. At first, I didn't listen to this one because her other CDs had higher ratings overall in the reviews. But, when I decided to listen, I was immediately hooked. I bought the CD and haven't been disappointed in the least. As a matter of fact, this one grows on me the more I hear it. Gillian has a "lazy" style on this that is perfect for those moody-weather days (or any others for that fact). She combines "old-time", "new grass" and "blues-flavor" in a modern, acoustic (except for one song) fashion that is addictive. I hope she does more work like this CD!
