This is a nice self-produced CD by a great, great singer and better than usual songwriter. The true gem here is the last song, simply and a bit confusingly listed as "Track 12." What we find is a sublime, gorgeous version of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night In Georgia" (made popular in the early 70's by Brook Benton). And who is among the great guitarists playing on this languid, understated arrangement? Tony Joe White himself. Shelby's laid-back, knock-out vocal tops it all off. Go to the CD store as quickly as you can and shelve this in your collection under "Classic."

Deana's debut album is a good, mainstream country album. Deanna's voice has an accent that works well singing the songs on this album. Songs to mention:
I've Loved Enough to Know - good spunky tune. The singer is dismissing a man who's just gonna be trouble.
We Danced Anyway - nice reminiscing love tune. Good piano parts
If This is Love - fast, toe-tapping song. The singer is enthused about love and being in love
Love Ain't Worth Making - classic "cry in the beer" country tune about a broken heart
Strawberry Wine - tune that got Deanna noticed. It's about losing virginity as a teen to a guy working on the farms and reminiscing back on that experience.

On first listening, you might think that this is simply an album of 'grooved out' Texas swamp-rock (are there many swamps in Texas?), but there is more to the music than just this. As much as anything, it's the sardonic humour of RWH's lyrics (often delivered with an air of nonchalance) that will command your attention; 'Ramona's got a keen sense of humor', but she's not the only one - RWH also has his moments (in fact, a good few of them). Also, the songs can be thought of as a series of mini character studies covering an assortment of individuals (including the Devil Incarnate) with dubious backgrounds, questionable morality and less than honourable intentions.
A couple of reviewers feel that many of the songs sound the same. To an extent, ... Read More:

No one else creates lyrics like John Prine, and nowhere else is his lyrical prowess more on display than on this album. I mean come on: "Naked as the eyes of a clown"? Who else but John Prine could twist up a line like that? I think this his is finest collection of lyrical masters, unless you want to purchase the anthologyGreat Days: The John Prine Anthology.

John Prine's material is never disappointing. This is just another example of that. My favorite is "Humididty Built The Snowman". Best tune among the album's great tunes. If you're a fan of John Prine, you won't find a disappointing album in the man's catalogue.

This CD is quintessential Dar and a must-have for anyone who loves a great story in song and terrific female vocals. This is one of her first CDs and her sensitive understanding of the human experience really comes through.

This CD contains all of the tracks from two very different, excellent Elektra albums by Jerry Jeff, "Too Old To Change" and "Jerry Jeff."
With a cohesive sound, emotional depth and breadth, and primarily quiet artistry, "Too Old To Change" is Jerry Jeff's masterwork as "Pancho and Lefty" is the masterwork of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The album is primarily acoustic, but the combination of unique arrangements and song tempos and Jerry Jeff's focused, powerful vocal delivery lend each tune a complexity rarely found in acoustic country recordings. The inclusion of a blistering rocker ("Ain't Livin' Long Like This") in the midst of these heartfelt songs sung with mastery, humor, and despair is puzzling until you realize it is another pure expression ... This John Prine's best album in my opinion and one of my favorite albums of all time. I was looking to see if it had been remastered. It doesn't appear so. It could sure use it. I guess most people have forgotten this gem so they haven't gone to the trouble to remaster. It IS a "Diamond In The Rough". Get it.
