Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits came out after Bob Dylan's motorcycle accident. Colombia was undoubtedly trying to capitalize on Dylan's growing fame. They didn't have the man himself to make a new record, so they put this out and a fine job they did. Back then, somebody at Colombia really cared about how Dylan was presented to the public. From Roland Scherman's gorgeous cover photo to the inclusion of Milton Glasier's psychedelic poster of Dylan, this package is first rate and the material is first rate too. All of the songs were recognized by Dylan's fans as important and most were radio hits. I like that brand of americana which veers more towards folk than country music. I chose this as my first Richard Shindell album because I was already familiar with some of the songs and song-writers represented. Also, because variety is often an important factor for me, I anticipated that a song selection such as this, would at least ensure a wide range of melodic and lyrical styles (which is very much the case, as it turns out).

RS has a distinctive voice - it has a slight nasal quality (but in a pleasant way, I should add); it has been compared to that of James Taylor, but I think it has a harder edge - closer to Gordon Lightfoot and, now and again, with shades of David Gray also. A good collection of some of REK's best songs. A fairly broad look at the different types of songs he's done, a solid intro to his music. A few live songs are here, and the choices for those are fitting:

18 I'm Comin' Home

All the other songs appear to be the original versions or so close that I can't really tell the difference.

And for the record, I believe REK is not "done". Three of these songs are from his last album in 2005. Of course, if it would goad Robert into putting out a new original album I'm all for saying he's over with :)

In his latest CD, "Workbench Songs," native Texan Guy Clark shows his fans how it's done as he spins memorable tales about tornadoes, new and lost love, and celebrating a holiday in Memphis.

"Tornado Time in Texas" came from Clark's memories of growing up in Monahans.

Verlon Thompson, Clark's long-time band member and collaborator on many songs, had written the song's first line, The sky was blacker than a funeral suit and it was hotter than a depot stove. The two of them took it from there.

The pace slows down a bit with "Magdalene," a plaintive ballad about running away from it all and "Funny Bone," the story of love gone bad.

This is as good as any good album by any of the artists featured here. There are some stand out songs/performances and some good ones and some okay ones. "Live" makes a difference. Favorites are by Elvis Costello, Tracy Chapman, and Patti Smith.

By 1976 Buffett had developed a solid cult following, but had still to really hit the big time. That would come with his next album "Changes In Latitudes", but on "Havana" he had yet to jump on the platinum bullet train. Buffett's backing unit The Coral Reefer Band was fully realized by this album, and the main players would remain with Buffett for years to come, some to this day. The album is again a mix of originals and covers with songs by Steve Goodman ("This Hotel Room"), Jesse Winchester ("Defying Gravity"), Fingers Taylor ("Big Rig"). I don't think that this album stands up to either the previous one "A1A" or the next one "Changes In Latitudes", but it does have it's moments. John Prine's material is never disappointing. This is just another example of that. My favorite is "Humididty Built The Snowman". Best tune among the album's great tunes. If you're a fan of John Prine, you won't find a disappointing album in the man's catalogue.
