This is a calm James Taylor album perfect for a late afternoon and an orange sunset. Not like Taylor's older rock albums, it has a more modern feeling, maybe slightly western but by no means country. Being a different kind of James Taylor it will appeal to a different kind of listener, sort of like the difference "Surprise" offers from most of Paul Simon's other work. Good, just a slightly different feel.
On here alot of the songs sound the same, that is except for the first track "Line 'Em Up" which I think is one of the all time best James Taylor songs. You remember how "Your Smiling Face" was jus a complete hit all the way around from the beginning? Well this is like that. From the first note you know that its well written and ... Read More:

For some reason, I didn't connect with Kasey's freshman set. I bought it because anything Lucinda Williams raves about is going to be interesting. This 2002 set popped into my pocket recently at a $2 sidewalk sale. I figured I'd give Chambers another listen. Whether it's me in a different space or Chambers, "Barricades & Brickwalls" is a more satisfying set for me. The title track is probably my favorite with its crunching electric guitars and its boogie feel that'd put a smile on Fred Eaglesmith's face, "You can chain me down on the edge of town; You can leave me there to die, but the railroad track will bring me back when the lonesome whistle cries." "I found the answer but I never liked it," Chambers sings on electric blowout "Crossfire." ... Read More:

I just listened to this today for the first time in a few years; I'd forgotten how great an album it is.
I've been a follower of Steve Earle's career since his first New York City shows, at the old Lone Star, in the mid-eighties. Saw him again as the opening act for Bob Dylan, and again at a rally outside the Republican convention in 2004. I always try to catch his rare TV appearances. I'm a fan of his radio show. I have all the albums, and they're all exceptional. It's like being asked to pick your favorite child, but for me, "Trancendental Blues" is his greatest achievement. At about the point this afternoon when "I Don't Want To Lose You Yet" faded into "Halo 'Round the Moon", I was reminded again of this simple fact: If anyone has made a better ... Read More:

I'm really surprised (and delighted) by all the positive reviews out there. I remember when this album came out, and the reviews were pretty tepid. Nevertheless, I pressed on, and I made this my first Jimmy Buffett album. I've always really liked it a lot, and I still break it out quite a bit.
I love the title song, one of my all time favorite Buffett songs. I've played it maybe 200 times or so (really), but it never gets old. The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful is another hilarious, charming song, and I adore the cover of Little Miss Magic. It's tender and quite moving. It reminds me a lot of Come Monday, one of Jimmy's most beautiful ballads.
Jimmy Buffett is never really taken seriously as a great songwriter/artist. ... Read More:

I like that brand of americana which veers more towards folk than country music. I chose this as my first Richard Shindell album because I was already familiar with some of the songs and song-writers represented. Also, because variety is often an important factor for me, I anticipated that a song selection such as this, would at least ensure a wide range of melodic and lyrical styles (which is very much the case, as it turns out).
RS has a distinctive voice - it has a slight nasal quality (but in a pleasant way, I should add); it has been compared to that of James Taylor, but I think it has a harder edge - closer to Gordon Lightfoot and, now and again, with shades of David Gray also. The subtle vocal harmonies are supplied by RS, Lucy Kaplansky, Sara Milonovich, ... Read More:
