Yes, it is a shame they found they needed to edit out some material. But if anything, they could of knocked out 'Tonights the night'... never did like that song and I always thought the track was a let down to the album ending. Otherwise a brilliant live compilation and recording. Actually always liked Neil Young but for some reason Live Rust was the only Neil Young album I ever bought, but probably among my 10 favorites and most listened to of all time.

Hiatt never sounded more gut-wrenchingly 'authentic' than on this very touching work. I recall a small documentary on his that came out at about to coincide with its launch, and if the recall is accurate, I think it was none less than John Lee Hooker who confides that when he first heard Hiatt on record, he and friends thought it was a black guy. That's some testimony to the conviction Hiatt brings to his rootsy-styles singing and playing.'Have a Little Faith in Me' has recently been re-recorded by someone who is getting current airplay, a disembowelling of it's originator's intention. It is from this point of the collection of 'Family ' songs that the big end of his muse lights up; a wonderful record for all time.

Jackson Browne (Saturate Before Using)

So Jackson, who was clearly listening to a lot of Bob Dylan records at the time, decided he wanted to be like a certain critically acclaimed, commercially successful living legend/cynical street poet with a really bad voice - only with a considerably better voice (technically speaking, anyway) and soft-rock instrumentation. Really, he only blew it on one count. Too bad that count was he didn't have the talent of Dylan's elbow. He tackles weighty topics - depression, suicide, drug addiction, apocalypse - but he doesn't say anything too revealing about any of them, and we wind up with several spare piano and acoustic guitar ballads that are lifeless and unoriginal, if earnest ("For Adam", "My Opening Farewell", "A Child in These Hills", et al). In my opinion, this is Neil Young's finest album. The album is sparse, with personal, enigmatic, and sometimes bleak lyrics. I first heard this when I was lucky enough to find a used LP in a head shop when I was in college back in the late 90s. Needless to say, the album blew my doors off. I'd already gotten in to Neil, courtesy of a classmate, but this album proved to be a real find. I was elated when it was finally released on CD.

On the Beach is probably my favorite Neil song of all time. The lyrics are interesting and the emotion conveyed is incredible. In addition, I don't think Neil's guitar ever seemed as plaintive as it does here. Simply beautiful despair. Crack a bottle of wine and put this one on with the lights low.

Listening to this album brings back those long lost days of youth and, like a fine wine, leaves a silky, if somewhat bittersweet, finish on my memory's tastebuds.

I remember seeing JB in Champaign in 1978...the Running On Empty tour. I'd been listening to him and buying every album since Saturate Before Using was released, but it seemed it took the popularity of ROE and The Pretender to open my friends' ears to the talent of this troubador. I've always marvelled at the poetry as well as the music on his first 4 albums.

JB has always been very political, but it was more tender, ironical and subtle on his early albums. I may not have always agreed with his politics, but I've always loved and admired his ability to put it into words the way he did. ... Read More:

Devils & Dust

I've only had one quick listen and haven't really had the opportunity to sit down and listen to it in depth. I didn't really care for "Nebraska" or "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" and thought this one was going to be more of the same. At first listen though I quite enjoyed what I heard. While I still prefer his albums with the E-Street Band, this was better than what I expected.

On a side note, I didn't really care for the F-bomb he dropped in probably my favourite song (track 4 I think). It seems a little beneath an artist of Bruce's talents. I didn't even notice but my young daughter pointed it out to me as we were listening. Come on Bruce, don't drop yourself down to the lowest common denominator.

Melissa sings every song like it's her last. Some would argue that that's not necessarily a good thing, but it makes for some pretty powerful music...especially on the hits "I'm The Only One" and "Come To My Window". Other songs that pack a lot of emotional wallop is the slow-building "Silent Legacy" and the Springsteen like "Talking To My Angel"

This CD also has a stellar band with Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Scott Thurston on keys, Pino Palladino playing bass on four tracks and Ian McLagen laying down some organ on "I Will Never Be The Same".
