Learning to Flinch

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Warren Zevon

Release Date April 13, 1993
In 1992 Zevon set out on a tour that would feature just him with a guitar, keyboard, and no backing band. This live album is from the tour and really showcases what an incredible artist Warren Zevon was. These are unplugged versions of many of Zevon's classics, some completely re-worked and some done rather straightforwardly. There are 17 songs on this disc and all of them are great. Zevon's voice is at times a little gruff, but never annoyingly so. Instrumentally he shows off just how good he is. Some of the piano and keyboard work is outstanding and Zevon also proves to be a better than average guitarist. Unplugged albums were all the rage around the time this came out, and many came and went without much substance or staying power. ... Read More:

It's a Mystery

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band

Release Date October 24, 1995
I do not understand the negative reviews. Personally, I have never really liked typical 80's music, but I never really thought that Bob Seeger fit into that stereotype--the make-up, the tight plastic pants, the weird "do." His music reminded me of many different things I listened to when I was young in the 60's, and I like this CD. And I do not regret owning it.

Some of the reviews speak about earlier CD's like they represent Bob's "Golden Age," but I do not see it. A few of the older CD's--in my opinion--do not hold up as well as this one, although I enjoy listening to them as well.

Again, in my opinion it is sad that the recording is no longer available.
It is well worth a listen if you can find it.

American Fool

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: John Cougar

Release Date October 25, 1990
This CD was "Johnny Cougar's" first step in breaking away from his media created image.
I absolutely HATED "Hurts so Good", and his other assorted nonsensical pop tunes.Fortunately, I have a friend {Thanks Cheryl} She had grown up in the same small town in Indiana as him and had listened to him on the local scene. She KNEW, and made it a point to tell EVERYONE, that "John Cougar" didn't exist. Then she made me listen to Danger List. That one song sold me on his talent. Weird thing was, American Fool was not allowed to be listed on the very album named for it, but it's there, at the end, if you knew to listen for it. Many people didn't.
It's easier to buy the new version where he was allowed to put it where ever he damn well wanted!

by: Melissa Etheridge

Release Date October 05, 1999
Melissa Etheridge reaches deep into the depths of her soul for this one. The album consists of 11 tracks that will touch you emotionally in some way. These heartfelt songs speak to the lonely and outcast. Feelings of break-ups, finding oneself, love lost and found, bigotry, honesty, and the confusing feelings of sexuality are the themes of this wonderful album..

Etheridge's voice is beautiful and soothing, and she captures just the right emotions and feelings for each song. In the song "Scarecrow" which she dedicates to the memomry of Matthew Shepard, his family and friends, she says :
"showers of your crimson blood
seep into a nation calling up a flood
thinly veiled intolerance
bigotry and hate....

I can't forget ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Hard Way

The Hard Way

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Steve Earle & the Dukes

Release Date February 06, 1996
The first Earle cd i ever bought...and still my favorite. Forget Springsteen, Earle is...was...the true champion of the common man. the downtrodden, the guy caught up in a bad situation whether his own fault or not. He started to change his style after this, and i started losing interest. This is Steve and the Dukes,at times, bordering on Country/Metal...and as a Harley rider, his lyrics strike a chord with me...NOWADAYS I GOT ME TWO GOOD WHEELS,I SEEK REFUGE IN ALUMINUM AND STEEL,YEAH IT TAKES ME OUT THERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE, AND THE YEARS ROLL AWAY WITH EVERY MILE. And Hard Way boasts the absolute best lineup of songs he's ever put together..Billy Austin,Justice in Ontario,Regular Guy,and Promise You Anything with Stacey Earle harmonizing. An overlooked masterpiece. Really makes me ... Read More:

Pete Townshend Live: A Benefit for Maryville Academy

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Pete Townshend

Release Date September 21, 1999
Pete Townshend is one of the great pioneers of rock music. He's witnessed fads come and go, genres rise and fall yet he's been pretty consistent in putting forth music that is a chip off the ol' block of things the Who. Let's face it, people regard certain groups like the Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin as THE standards for haiving influenced rock music. However the people I know probably have the greatest regard for the Who. I have a recording of the Who from the Fillmore East in 1968, before Tommy, Who's Next et al, and it is a blazing testament to the greatness of that band.
So here is this Townshend album, a benefit show recorded in Chicago circa 1997. First I think Pete turned in an amazing show for a charitable organization he admires. I can't get over how good his guitar playing ... Read More:
