CD-Charts Music : Tiny Voices

Tiny Voices

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Joe Henry

Release Date September 23, 2003
I picked up Joe Henry's "Fuse" when it first came out on the strength of gushing reviews. I was immediately smitten with "Monkey," and bored to tears with the rest. I tried to get through "Fuse" three times, and each was more painful than the last (I single-tracked "Monkey" a whole lot, though). I vowed never to get within ten feet of a Joe Henry CD ever again. But then I heard "Animal Skin" on the radio and gave him one more try.

"Tiny Voices" looks great on paper. You would think from the reviews here and elsewhere that Joe Henry is the second coming. I agree with other reviewers that it's "uncategorizable," but "uncategorizable" can mean a lack of focus. I also agree that it's "jazzy:" it clunkily incorporates a surficial ... Read More:

The Best of Pete Townshend: Coolwalkingsmoothtalkingstraightsmokingfirestoking

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Pete Townshend

Release Date April 23, 1996
Townshend, of course, is the main man behind one of the greatest rock bands of all time, The Who. Along with his work with The Who Townshend has also pursued a vibrant solo career that found him much success in the 80's and 90's. This compilation album is a nice overview of his solo stuff and includes all of his hits and several cool album cuts up to the mid - 90's. As in any single disc compilation there are many songs that could have been included here that are not, but overall this is a pretty decent overview. If anything the album points out the inconsistency of Townshend's solo stuff. At times he is nothing but brilliant especially on songs like "Rough Boys", "Give Blood", "English Boy", "Slit Skirts", and "A Little I Enough". Other songs ... Read More:

You have probably owned these volumes separately on LP, 8 Track and cassette, but if you haven't bought them yet on CD, get them all together. It all sounds as fantastic as you remember.

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Steve Earle

Release Date August 24, 2004
I am a big Steve Earle fan. While his big hits are catchy and memorable, no song on this album qualifies. I have come to love Steve for his way of hiding an important life lesson within the tune, rather than beating a dead horse with militantly-liberal propaganda. This album contains far too much of the later and none of the former.

Some of the tunes on the album are nice and just the same ole' Steve. However, I hesitate to call many of them music.

While it pains me to give such a harsh review to a legend like Steve Earle, this is not a work of art. This reeks of propaganda.

My Ride's Here

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Warren Zevon

Release Date May 07, 2002
"My Ride's Here" is neither a great Warren Zevon album or a clunker. Overall I find it rather average for Zevon although there are several great tracks on the disc. "Sacrificial Lambs", the Celtic influenced "MacGillicuddy's Reeks", "You're A Whole Different Person When Your Scared", and the title track are all very good. Another great song is "Hit Somebody" which is possibly the best song about Hockey ever written. The song features talk show host David Letterman yelling out "hit somebody" in the background of this story of an NHL hockey goon who just wants to score a goal. The rest of the album is all decent, but nothing mind blowing. I also find it interesting that Zevon does two covers on the album which is unusual for him. That coupled with the album ... Read More:

The Tiki Bar Is Open

by: John Hiatt

Release Date September 11, 2001
He's rarely made a record since 1987 that wasn't worth having, but this is - no arguments will be entered into - his finest hour.

The nod to Guillaume Apollinaire in "Farther Stars" ensures John of a bed at our place any time if his luck should ever drive south.

The Hard Way

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Steve Earle & the Dukes

Release Date February 06, 1996
The first Earle cd i ever bought...and still my favorite. Forget Springsteen, Earle is...was...the true champion of the common man. the downtrodden, the guy caught up in a bad situation whether his own fault or not. He started to change his style after this, and i started losing interest. This is Steve and the Dukes,at times, bordering on Country/Metal...and as a Harley rider, his lyrics strike a chord with me...NOWADAYS I GOT ME TWO GOOD WHEELS,I SEEK REFUGE IN ALUMINUM AND STEEL,YEAH IT TAKES ME OUT THERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE, AND THE YEARS ROLL AWAY WITH EVERY MILE. And Hard Way boasts the absolute best lineup of songs he's ever put together..Billy Austin,Justice in Ontario,Regular Guy,and Promise You Anything with Stacey Earle harmonizing. An overlooked masterpiece. Really makes me wonder ... Read More:

Longing in Their Hearts

CD-Charts > Music > Singer-Songwriters
by: Bonnie Raitt

Release Date March 22, 1994
This is a tremendous CD... though definitely not as glossy and smooth as the ones that came after, or as rough and textured as those before. For some reason, even though there are a few songs I can do without, (I Sho Do comes to mind) songs like "Feeling of Falling", Cool Clear Water" and the title track have remained my favorite Bonnie songs since this CD came out.

There is a funky goove here... and enough attitude to show that Bonnie Raitt is no computer enhanced lip-synching pop diva powderpuff. No way - she's the REAL DEAL. Has been for so long I can't remember... and she still belts it out better than anyone. She's made a huge mark in a world that wasn't exactly welcoming to her at first... and this CD shows why. Virtuoso musicianship, a deadly groove, sultry, strong vocals and that ... Read More:

by: Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Release Date August 19, 2003
I've been listening to Neil Young off and on since the late seventies, growing up on vinyl such as After the Goldrush,Harvest,Rust Never Sleeps etc...so,I recently traveled back in the archives and upgraded my collection on cd,such as Massey Hall,(which is brilliant.)Harvest moon,On the Beach,Prairie wind etc..along with this newer album GREENDALE and after listening to the first spin, thinking to myself, not bad,the man wrote a book on record, what a heck of an idea.At this point in mr. youngs' long and successful career, why not,got nothing to lose.To be honest,GREENDALE would've been a much better record acoustic as is seen on the bonus disk. This would be the first time I've ever seen Neil Young live, filmed in Dublin,Ireland.I never realized what a brilliant guitar player Neil really is until I viewed ...
