As a person that owns every CD that Ms. DiFranco has made must say that Not A Pretty Girl is my absolute favorite. The songs are edgy and completely rocking. Its political and emotional and just AMAZING!! I think this album is grossly underrated by her fans. The title track has quite possibly the best lyrics that she has written ever. It speaks to me as a woman and an individual. The songs on here changed my life.

It's cool that there are so many reviews (mine'll make 100) regarding this CD. Most are enthusiastic, and that's cool, too. But those recommending this work should be more up-front with themselves and others that what they love about the "raw emotion" et cetera is really in the vocals and lyrics. The music itself is substandard, and folks, I grew up as a punk guy (Dead Kennedies, et al) and musical proficiency is still NOT a priority for me.
Positive reviewers should realize that the negative reviewers are probably more "in tune" with the lack of hooks or other non-lyrical proficiency on this CD (with the exception of "Teclo"). Put another way, this CD is not "accessible" and it's probably why the enthusiasm level is so high amongst ... Read More:

Ani DiFranco is a one-of-a-kind artist. Poet, singer, guitarist, feminist, lable-maker/owner....the list could continue for quite a while. As an avid Ani listener, I have heard EVERY album (even live albums) by her, and I personally find this to be the most raw of them all. I have seen her multiple times live and this is a great representation of her on stage. She is so cute! Please buy this album...it will enrich your life!

Yes, this one even pushed the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack out of number 1. It's a wonderful collection. My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night" and I have a very hard time finding good versions of it. This one is beautiful. The only downside is that she only performs one verse. I would have loved to hear the entire hymn, even if it would have been 10 minutes long! But it's still great.

When I first heard Tom's Diner it was like I was sitting there next to the artist watching these event unfold as you sat in the window booth. But I was blown away when she sang the whole thing in acapella. Luka I already like from hearing it on the radio. Ironbound and Gypsy stirred up images in my mind of hardship and fleating love. Night Vision took me a few years to figure out...yeah I am a little slow sometimes. But when I got it it was another 'wow' moment. That is what I like about Suzanne Vega's music. It makes me get lost in the lyrics images. Tom's Diner is a prime example. But if you are a person that likes lyrics that don't make you think or imagine then you shouldn't buy this CD.

Very disappointed. Heard her on NPR and she seems to be getting a bit desperate as her career progresses. Album has 2 good classic Phair tunes other than that she sounds like a whiner. As a women, I would say grow up- if you even start going down the Allanis Morrosette road- Don't, you would be a sell-out and let us all down as women. Who cares- you like sex!!!!!

I cannot believe the negative and unfortunate reviews here for this album. Do so many people really feel cheated by this CD, calling it a bunch of rough demos? That is just insane!
Heres the thing - this is a very superior collection of songs that in no way can be called demos. Just because they aren't of the highly polished variety such as the ones on 'Grace' in no way makes these recordings inferior.
Take for instance the second track - 'Everybody here wants you' - is there a single more touching torch song in the entire Jeff Buckley catalog? I don't think so. What a song. What a melody. What a voice! That song alone is the worth the $15 asking price for this CD.
Needless to say, I am a huge Jeff Buckley fan, and consider ... Read More:

This album is fantastic. Some highlights: "Long Shot", "Frankenstein", "Amateur", "Superball"...Every song on here is great. I found this solo album even better than the first ("Whatever").

Comfort of Strangers sits next to all my other Beth Orton albums in my iTunes playlist (Trailer Park, Central Reservation, Daybreaker), and it never gets listened to unless I do a listen-through of Central Reservation and then forget to switch to something else once Comfort of Strangers follows. Despite multiple listens, these songs are just not growing on me in the way that all of Orton's other albums that I own did. Even Daybreaker, which I found originally to not be as captivating as Central Reservation, is well-loved by this point.

Emerging from the shadow of Kurt Cobain in the late 90's, Elliott Smith was perhaps the greatest singer songwriter of his generation. Smith's genius was his unabashedly honest, naked, poetic lyricism that was so beautifully complemented by his unpretentiousness acoustic guitar. Like none that came before him, Smith delivers note after note of haunted, sparkling melancholy. Far from gloomy, his songs radiate with incredible emotional intensity. Combining an unbridled punk rage within the guise of an acoustic folk song, his songs speak for themselves. Reflective and introspective, each song unfolds like a delicately wrapped package, revealing itself slowly. Smith's songs present themselves like late night thoughts that just won't go away. Concerning themselves with drug abuse, ... Read More:
