This is one of my favorite albums/CDs from the 80s, and should be considered essential 80s rock. Arguably, it is Elvis Costello's best album, a work of true artistic genius. Critically acclaimed Imperial Bedroom (1982) marked a turning point for Costello and The Attractions (consisting of Steve Nieve on piano, Bruce Thomas on bass guitar, and Pete Thomas on drums). It was Costello's first album of original material not produced by Nick Lowe. Whereas Costello's clever wordplay on Imperial Bedroom is dark and literate, the music is upbeat (a trademark of many of my all-time favorite albums). Although individual songs stand on their own, as the album coverr suggests they flow together on the album into one stunning musical experience.

If/when this ever is reprinted you MUST purchase it. It is beautiful in ways that I can't describe. For a writer/musician who is known for writing some amazing pieces, this is his pinnacle.

You will sob. You will laugh. You will rage. You will be haunted.

From a purely musical perspective, when you listen to this CD you are in the presence of great genius.

Listen to it alone, at least at first. Listen in the dark and let the imagery flow over you like fog.

I was very disappointed with this, but gave it 3 stars because it's probably my fault for not listening to the samples or reading the description closely enough. I don't know what I was expecting when I got this, but am a Jewel fan and thought it was just different versions of her "Serve the Ego" single. It is, but they're dance club mixes, and I can't see why anyone would enjoy listening to this CD unless they're on the dancefloor or at a club. The tracks are all repetitive and pretty much all sound the same to me. All drum beats with her lyrics every couple of minutes.

I don't want to fault the CD since I'm not a fan of dance mixes and can't judge whether this is a good one or not since I don't know what constitutes a "good" dance mix, but buyer beware, this ... Read More:

I agree with another member here. Crowded House are a lot of fun and highly enjoyable live. I have seen them up close and personal, years ago, in a small club. I also had the good fortune to seem them during the Woodface tour with Tim.

But this is in a whole different league...darker, more mature...and infinitely more interesting. Get the outstanding DVD 'Sessions at West 54th' for a great live performance of the major tunes from this disc.

"Our Shadows Will Remain" is up to the same excellent standards Joseph Arthur has set with "Come to Where I'm From"(my favorite) and Redemption's Son".

You can't go wrong with any of these three and if you like Joseph Arthur -you should go ahead and get them all. "Nuclear Daydream" and "Big City ..." are fine for a fan (which I am), but start with one of the three I suggest here if you are just being introduced to him.

I really loved this dreamy and haunting album from the first listen but I was completely won over when I saw Suzanne tour on this record. Not a particularly entertaining or energetic performer, she wisely used the images from the CD booklet (and others) as surreal backdrops. It allowed me to literally swim in the richness of each song. The images deepened the lyrics and enhanced the music. I know this is a review of the CD but I can no longer separate the music from the feeling having each song wash over me as it did at the concert.

My suggestion is then to do something quite revolutionary in this day and age: buy this CD (okay that already is revolutionary!), trust me - buy this CD, find an uninterrupted hour in a perfect environment for you and you can listen ... Read More:

Tori Amos cd single to Jackie's Strength has the most two gorgeous songs of all-time, Never Seen Blue and Beulah Land. I love, love, love these tracks to pieces, haunting and lush piano ballads. And Jackie's Strength is my favorite Tori song from her LP From the Choirgirl Hotel. If there is one EP to purchase, this is the one for you!
