She says it right in her songs. That's why she talks to us in the way she does. It's strange, you should see my cd collection -it goes Deftones, Static-X, Tool, Coal Chamber, Marilyn Manson, Poe, Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, etc. etc. I don't normally go for this particular type of music but Annie Danielewski can be suducting in more ways than one. Her lyrics lay down how a song can spiral deep inside the psyche. "you must of had your moments... inside the sun" - "cause that day, in my life, I dreamt tomorrow had a prettier face. I dreamt tomorrow we'd have better things to say". Her voice will simmer nerves to the point that you'll keep coming back for more. It's hypnotic, it's beautiful, it's Poe. 'Hello' is definately her best album. For ... Read More:

Her whiny voice, dreary music style, and jaded lyrics are enough to put me to sleep. 3 tracks were good but none of them incredible: "This One's Gonna Bruise," "Concrete Sky," & "Daybreaker."
Release Date August 11, 1998
This is far and away my favorite Liz album - "Polyester Bride" is one of the best tracks she has ever done, and with songs about being beaten around ("but I liked it, yeah I liked it more and more"); this is the classic mixing of early brash indie Liz and her later pop leanings.

(Actually ***1/2, but Amazon doesn't allow half stars.)
Ani's third record is nearly full of fine Ani songs offering the compassionate, cutting wit that keeps me coming back to her music:
"They made sure I wasn't smuggling someone in from Mexico, someone willing to settle for America 'cause there's nowhere else to go."
"I'm not on the rag, but I'm not on the run."
"I sing what I wish I could say."
"It's Mr. DiFranco to you."
"He caresses every bottle like it's the first one he's had, saying 'It ain't love, but it ain't bad.'"
That last comes from a song in which she cuts some slack to a run-down, drunken ex-con who keeps making unwelcome passes at her, a bit of ... Read More:

I got this album about three years ago. When I first aquired it, I gave it a quick listen and then put it away for about 2 years. I pulled it out again and listened to it. I WAS BLOWN AWAY. I was on a long drive and I found myself getting extremely involved in the songs, the images, and the story Mr. Bazan told.
"Options" sets the mood for the album perfectly: an introduction, or backstory, to the affair between a husband and wife. "So I told her I love her. And she told me she loves me. And I mostly believed her. And she mostly believed me. But for now I need you..."
Then it happens. "Rapture" beautifully reveals the affair. "This is how we multiply. Pity that it's not my wife..." The imagery in this song is inspiring in so many ... Read More:

I just had to leave a five-star rating in hopes of bumping up the overall rating of this album. This is at the top of my list of Shawn Colvin albums, with Polaroids probably being right next to it. I especially love her version of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." I also love "Killing the Blues," "Window to the World," and "If These Walls Could Speak."
Shawn Colvin has such a smooth, iridescent, mesmerizing voice. One of the most soothing voices I've ever heard.

When I purchased my IBM Thinkpad notebook PC many, many years ago, it had a sample A-V file which was the music video "Good Times". When I upgraded, I missed this song and ordered the CD which included it. I was pleasantly surprised to find gems such as track 11, "Like I Do Now". Most of the songs were more soulful (such as this one), instead of upbeat like the song I originally wanted, but it made for greast easy listening in the evening. Although not a chart-topper, it's a solid album.

Joseph Arthur doesn't fit in a box. He has his own, changing constantly, freeing himself all over again.
Some call him a singer songwriter, some indie, others plain artist (he often does his own cover and booklet art).
Whatever you decide to call him, he is an extremely talented musician. Beautiful melodies, haunting lyrics.
Rest assured, once you've opened up to his music it doesn't let go. I bought his first album Big City Secrets back in 1996 and have been a fan since. Every new album is a surprise (thank God he found a record company who allows him the freedom). What is he doing this time, what has he come up with, who is he working with?
On this album amongst others: T Bone Burnett, Jim Keltner, Ben Findley. Twelve great songs by Joseph ... Read More:

Nina Gordon's solo debut sparkles and pops like a firecracker. Every song, fast or slow, reaches a point where it explodes with enthusiasm and angst. Not as melodic or melancholy as Nina's recent "Bleeding Heart Graffiti", "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" oozes attitude.
This is one of those albums I picked off the shelf because I particularly liked the cover art. I had never heard of Nina Gordon nor did I know she was previously a member of Veruca Salt. But I was quickly impressed with the music and how infectious many of the songs were, like addictive candy. The ballads got me hooked. The perky guilty pleasures kept my spirits up. This album has a great balance of slow and fast, and is a wonderful example of the silver lining theory. The theme of every ... Read More:

I bought this c.d. in the nineties and loved it. I recently rediscovered it and love it all over again. She is a talented musician.
