She did a good job, but I do not know much about classical music. Saw this on youtube, heard it, I liked it. So I bought it.

Herbert von Karajan, the septuagenarian conductor of this recording has been ebullient and full of life as ever. Karajan took full command of the Berliner Phihamoniker orchestra demonstrating his long artistic experience about the blissful meaning of this Requiem as though he were also the author, the musician, and the composer.
This Requiem is a happy one. Mozart did his work in a mood of friendly reception of what is inevitably coming. The composer genius never feared the event of dying or departure from life, it was not scaring to his character. The teachings of certain short-tempered and intransigent dictatorial clerics that made death dreaded and hated gave Mozart welcome opportunity to defeat this credo and show his mettle as an erudite ... I'm a musicologist and former choral conductor, and I think this is an absolutely wonderful interpretation by all involved (I find Scholl's countertenor to be a bit harsh, but that's a small point.) I like the forcefulness of the back-and-forth between the two choirs in the first chorus..."Behold! Who? The Bridegroom." It has great rhetorical power, which is an important aspect of the chorus, exhorting the congregation to witness the Passion events.
MAC USERS BEWARE: this was produced back in '99, in the days of OS 9.
The CD-ROM won't work on Macs running OS X.
Macs just evolve too quickly I guess! ;o)

I really enjoy this CD, it reminds me of the music I grew up. I was looking for something to just have on in the background, in my home during the day. I was disappointed that there were too many songs I didn't know, but this was the best choral music CD I could find so far that included both religious carols and non-religious carols.

On this standard red book 16-bit CD we are offered that rare and special invitation: Come now, pilgrim - take yet another good step forward in gospel praise or supplication. How can we progress in our individual and collective spiritual journeys towards whatever transcendent glories ground us, revive us, and lead us on despite life's challenges, unless we sing?. Are you having set backs? This CD is good medicine, and it is both a worthy addition to the gospel music shelf and perhaps just the sort of musical medicine that turns out to be good for you, on more than one level of body, mind, and soul. Not a bitter root aftertaste, nor a nagging fishy oil payback in any of this welcome elixir. I guess that is why we call it, Good News.

This recording is a delightful morning brew of Bach's most beautiful and atmospheric instrumental music, even making use of an instrument that most music scholars forget he even wrote music for - the harp, as in the SLonatas for Flute, Harp and Cello, which on this recording, sound positively radiant coming from the likes of Sir Neville Marriner's Academy of St Martin In The Fields or the English Chamber Orchestra. The opening track is the ever popular Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, mostly a featured piece in Wedding Ceremonies. The Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D, which I believe is marked "Overture" is regal and elegant. The English Suite No. 3 in G Minor is a lovely piece, as is the intimately slow andane of the Brandenbur Concerto No. 2. The Concerto for Violin and Panpies ... Read More:

I have an enormous amount of affection for this anthlogy. The music is quintessential Purcell- ingeneous, straight-forward, the show tune king of his day. This is a seven disc set. The first four discs are performed by Musica Antiphon, one of several European H.I.P. ensembles who seem to draw personnel from the same pool. This particular group empressed me earlier with a performance of the Telemann Tafelmusik which was far more spirited and fun than the benchmark perfomance by Musica Antiqua Koln. That same sense of fun is present here as well. The final three discs are harpsichord (and a little organ) pieces played by Pieter-Jan Belder. His performances are pleasant and musical as well. It is nice to hear music in these discs (instead of a prissy HIP seminar). My only qualm ... Read More:

I don't know opera.
Last summer we had an incredible 20th anniversary trip to Italy. As a side trip from Venice, we planned a night in Verona. Neither my wife or I had been to an opera.
Is this how its supposed to be...
...an incredible star filled night with a three quarter moon, the largest stage and outdoor theatrical production on the planet, all taking place in a roman colleseum (arena) built in 180 a.d., an incredible colorful set and production with a full symphony orchestra and voices that don't come easy. Aida.
Now I know what all the hpye is as you opera fans sure are lucky to have such a beautiful setting for all your productions.
Okay, we got spoiled. But I also found myself getting spoiled on the Italian ... Read More:
