What can I say - I loved this music in 1973 and I do so in 2008. It`s a great album and it was a little drop on the stone when C.C.R get split of some time before. Everyone who loves the music from John Fogerty - please buy this record.

by: Robbie Robertson

Release Date October 25, 1990
Unlike many other reviewers here, I'm NOT a Band fan. (Don't hate 'em, just don't love 'em.) And if you're looking for more Band, you're out of luck here, unless you can put your preconceptions aside and approach the album with an open mind. I would never have picked this album up on my own, but my husband introduced me to it. If I listen to it now, I skip through several of the songs: I can't stand Hell's Half Acre, or Sonny Got Caught... but I absolutely adore the real emotion that goes beyond pretty singing on Broken Arrow. Mind you, I do appreciate good singing, having taken voice lessons for many years -- I just don't think that it's necessary for a singer to sound like Michael Buble' to create a distinctive sound. And distinctive ... Read More:

Excellent vintage rock and roll with some brooding blues tracks. Some numbers are done with a slightly different tempo than on the artist's CD - with a better effect - in my view.

BUYER BEWARE. Item on offer as new through Amazon is a CD-R of original issue with photocopied artwork. For example, there are no interior notes, whereas the original CBS issue contained lyrics to all songs, which are important with such a literate release.

CD-Charts Music : Mission Temple Fireworks Stand

Mission Temple Fireworks Stand

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Paul Thorn

Release Date August 13, 2002
Paul Thorn's America of faith healers and tent revivals is there between the Wal-Marts, strip malls and McDonalds that seem to be everywhere in this country. Its a beautiful and ugly place, it's strengths are the stories of people who we don't often hear about (Sister Ruby, for example, is a real person, I don't know about the Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, but I hope it's real too) and a joyous rocking sound, which we need to hear more of.

From the UK,America often gives the impression that it really is nothing more than one big McDonald's. Paul Thorn is evidence of another America, more different, beautiful and humane. Kind of like Brendan Croker (go look him up).

Ry Cooder

Release Date May 09, 1995
This Japanese mini-lp replica version of Ry Cooder debut is simply a work of art! Very beautifully designed with all the lyrics included and with a sound quality remastered to perfection.
This 2007 Warner reissue is by far the best version of this album that is out there; great sound quality, great packaging, great songs! A must have in any CD collector's library. A real collectors item of these guitarist, top 10 of all times.

CD-Charts Music : Bayou Country

Bayou Country

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Release Date October 25, 1990
A very under-rated, intense swampy-bluesy, album which I appreciate now even more than when it was first released. Contains some outstanding material.

Proud Mary, the most popular song, was a deserved big hit but Born On The Bayou is the best song. An intense, brooding, swampy - occasionally even slinky - masterpiece with scowling vocals that John Fogerty does better than any other man alive. Play it loud and get into the mood of the song. Magnificent. One of the greatest songs of the era.

Bootleg is an excellent, catchy tune which also is typically swampy while being laid back and ultra cool. Very under-rated; few people have heard it but when they do for the first time it is an instant success. I'm surprised they ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Scarecrow

Scarecrow

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: John Mellencamp

Release Date May 24, 2005
Looking back on my high school years, Scarecrow was one of the most popular and prevalent albums to be released in the 80's, along with Springsteen's "Born In The USA" and, unfortunately, Michael Jackson's "Thriller." (not my thing)

Do you realize all 12 tracks on this album were singles? I'm not sure how many hit #1 or were top 10 exactly, but how often can you say that about any album in rock history?

Scarecrow hit a chord with middle America, celebrated our innocence, and reminded us of a time when almost all of us had a relative who owned or once owned a farm or lived in the country.

During the "good times" of the 80's when the economy was strong, jobs were abundant, the internet didn't exist, and cable TV ... Read More:

La Pistola y El Corazon

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Los Lobos

Release Date October 25, 1990
Everyone knows Los Lobos know how to rock, but this album shows their outstanding musicianship in the totally different context of traditional Mexican music. Using only acoustic instruments, they have produced an eminently listenable, smoothly produced and accessible entry point for the everyday listener to get into this rich musical tradition. Whether you are a serious or casual listener, or just want terrific background music for a dinner party, you can't go wrong with this album.

Strangers Almanac

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Whiskeytown

Release Date July 29, 1997
I'm sorry folks...Ryan just doesn't write songs this good anymore. I think everything he wrote from this period to around "Rock N Roll" is magnificent. But all 3 albums he released in 2005 were weak and Easy Tiger is just a slight notch above them, but not much. Compare any of his post-2004 output to anything from this album. Every song here is beautiful and heartfelt. Even the weaker songs are carried along by beautiful vocal harmonies and rich intrumentation. Amazing melodies, choruses, etc. What more can I say? I honestly like this album and "Faithless Street" better than "Heartbreaker", and honestly any fan of "Gold" would love this album.
