Still Feel Gone

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Uncle Tupelo

Release Date April 15, 2003
Often it seems like the first cd you ever get by a band, the one that makes you a fan, that'll often be your favorite, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else. That's the case with STILL FEEL GONE for me. Even though ANODYNE is more mature and impressive, and NO DEPRESSION is more intense, somehow this is still my favorite.

It's a bit of a sluggish mess, though, sonically! I wonder if anyone who has this remastered version can talk about a) any changes in the sound and b) the quality of the bonus tracks.

[If you're curious about Uncle Tupelo and don't have any of their albums, get their "greatest hits" collection for starters. They only have 4 real albums, though. Note that "March 16-20" is a VERY acoustic album, ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Steve Earle

Release Date August 24, 2004
I am a big Steve Earle fan. While his big hits are catchy and memorable, no song on this album qualifies. I have come to love Steve for his way of hiding an important life lesson within the tune, rather than beating a dead horse with militantly-liberal propaganda. This album contains far too much of the later and none of the former.

Some of the tunes on the album are nice and just the same ole' Steve. However, I hesitate to call many of them music.

While it pains me to give such a harsh review to a legend like Steve Earle, this is not a work of art. This reeks of propaganda.

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Chris Isaak

Release Date January 24, 1990
First heard this on NPR (of all places)in 1985. I wore out the first album copy, spent months trying to find a replacement (pre amazon of course!), and then wore that one out. I finally got it on CD and have since transferred it to my iPod where it is now one of those treats that when it comes up on shuffle, I have to stop whatever I am doing and listen to it.
I think it's his best although I love all of his CD's.
James Calvin Wilsey is too cool with his moody evocative guitar backing Issak's Orbison type vocals.

Walker

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Joe Strummer

Release Date July 26, 2005
Everybody knows that reggae is the punk rocker's preferred style of World music, but Strummer was at home in any third world culture. He certainly sounds at home on this CD, playing straight-up traditional, acoustic Central American music, almost all of it instrumental (with three or four terrific vocal tracks)--even more at home than he ever did on any reggae/dub/rap song he did with the Clash. For me, the Walker soundtrack provides a total foreshadowing of the kind of music he would make later with the Mescaleros, espeically on Global A-Go Go. But this CD is not just an interesting artifact for the Strummer scholar; it's also a very enjoyable listen. Strongly recommended for fans of Strummer and fans of largely-instrumental soundtracks like Bob Dylan's ... Read More:

American Fool

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: John Cougar

Release Date October 25, 1990
This CD was "Johnny Cougar's" first step in breaking away from his media created image.
I absolutely HATED "Hurts so Good", and his other assorted nonsensical pop tunes.Fortunately, I have a friend {Thanks Cheryl} She had grown up in the same small town in Indiana as him and had listened to him on the local scene. She KNEW, and made it a point to tell EVERYONE, that "John Cougar" didn't exist. Then she made me listen to Danger List. That one song sold me on his talent. Weird thing was, American Fool was not allowed to be listed on the very album named for it, but it's there, at the end, if you knew to listen for it. Many people didn't.
It's easier to buy the new version where he was allowed to put it where ever he damn well wanted!

Release Date July 24, 2007
always been a big fan of Brian Setzer. I bought this disc SOLELY based upon the reviews I read right here at Amazon. Thanks to all who reviewed before me. The reviews were right on the money, as this disc ROCKS, from beginning (Red Hot) to end (Gene & Eddie). THIS is what Amazon is all about. Thank you !!

This is the best Hip album since Phanton Power. Maybe since Fully Completely. If you've lost interest in The Hip over the last couple releases, you'll relish this return to form.

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: Beat Farmers

Release Date August 27, 1991
This followup to 'Tales of the New West' and the EP 'Glad n Greasy' gets a lot of discussion among fans of the band. It is different than the debut in that there is less of a roots feel, there are fewer songs by the late genius singer/songwriter/guitarist Buddy Blue, and the production on some cuts is considered murky. While this may be true, the material is still strong throughout. I have compared this disc to the Stones 'Exile on Main St', which had a muddy sound mix, but classic material and is now considered perhaps their best disc. This album lacks a standout group of rockabilly cuts, but there is a great one, 'Gun Sale at the Church', which I consider one of Blue's finest songs. The rock n roll edge is honed with 'Riverside', 'Seven Year Blues', and 'Buy Me a Car', ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Roots Rock
by: John Hiatt

Release Date September 07, 1993
I like John Hiatt. Always have. I like a lot of different artists and groups. That being said, most CDs being put out have a couple of songs I like, most are OK and some songs I would have left off the release. This CD however is one of the few that just demands to be heard and appreciated. There isn't any filler, no bad cuts, no crap - just great, great songs.

When I first heard the CD I was totally blown away - and I still am when I put this on. When I am listening to this CD everything gets put on hold until it is over with - it's that good.

If this CD is not in your collection, what are you waiting for? Get it now.
