The other reviewers here have described both these masterpieces quite perfectly. So I'll just add that they both are written & conceived by Paul Kennerly, Emmylou Harris' ex, the guy who wrote all the "good" songs by the Judds, an Englishman who helped late seventies/early eighties Country Music to be something more than a vehicle for whiny, adenoidal lil' boyz wearing cowboy hats or vapor-brained former "beauty queens." And on a more personal note, after moving from somewhere in Georgia to an even-more-undefinable "somewhere" in Ohio, the combination of Eric Clapton's bottleneck-slide guitar, Steve Cash's vocal on the song "White Trash" and a 12 oz Red Bull kind of..."solidify reality" when things tend to get..."weird" up here in Buckeye ... A solid collection that displays the range of Snider's music while offering classics like Talkin' Seattle Blues. A good first disk for those looking to add some Todd Snider to their collection--which, if you have made it this far researching the relatively obscure artist--you should.

No doubt, this is an inspired album. The songs, the singing and the playing are all first rate. Derek Trucks certainly has a style that is much different from Dicky Betts, but he is no less of a player. I gladly give it 4 stars for that alone.
Here's the rub. As great as the intense-hot tone of the guitars are, they never vary...too much continuous brightness and distortion. These guys get a great smokin' hot tone on their electrics, but how about a mellow tone every now and then? What made extended numbers like Whipping Post and Reed work was the variance of dynamics. Granted, ears aren't young, but they felt assaulted after 76 minutes. An acoustic number or two in the midst of the program would have helped. By the time Old Friend comes at ... Read More:

There's cerainly nothing wrong with this solid album, it just didn't take him anywhere new after his critically acclaimed "Scarecrow". The singles are all as solid as ever, and he has good moments in the supporting tracks, particularly on "Hard Times For An Honest Man". I just felt that after the terrific step forward on "Scarecrow", Mellencamp would get more adventurous; he wouldn't take that step until 1993's "Human Wheels".

I went to see CC Adcock at Jazz Fest this year. Had a guy named Bramhall playing with him. CC was his usual mix of cool and grease but the songs were instantly catchy. Turns out Bramhall is sort of a legend. Turns out they are playing together because they just put together an album. Turns out the album is even more terrific than the Jazzfest set. Bramhall writes good hooks. The songs stay with you. Adcock keeps it raw."Cryin" is pure classic Swamp Pop.
CC Adcock is becoming the great collaborator. Robert Plant hung out with him in Lafayette (Louisiana, the Cajun capital)last year. Plant says "He's a piece of work - but I like him."

The third Mother Truckers CD, Let's All Go To Bed is a continuation of more great music from a band that blends styles together so well it is hard to categorize their work. It is a fusion of Blues, Country, Rock, Americana and a little bit of old school ukulele from the past. With their new rhythm section their live sound has become more powerful and this CD captures that energy. The primary members Teal Collins and Josh Zee form a duo that shares the vocals and guitars. Ms. Collins has never sounded better and her powerful voice shines on Billy Joe Shaver's "When I Get My Wings" but shows a softer side on "Quiet Night". Mr. Zee not only has mastered the electric guitar he pushes it to new heights. Buy this and all their CD's but remember to catch them live as well.

Every few months, I make out a Top 15 "Desert Island" list of my favorite albums. There are a few who always make the top 10 and this BoDeans release is one of them.
Catchy melodies, great lyrics...with not a dull song in the bunch (you know the kind--you skip it on the CD player or leaving it off when you download the album on to your computer.
You can't go wrong with this terrific CD. The Strangest Kind is one of my all-time favorite songs!
