This is a great, relatively low priced introduction to Serge Gainsbourg's greatest hits. Personally I think his earlier works shine much brighter than the later stuff (when he was blazing trails and creating trends rather than following them), so I play the first CD almost exclusively, but it is so strong that it's worth buying the double album. I recently "discovered" Serge and it is amazing what a cutting edge musician he was: sampling, incorporating carribean and African beats, and rapping (in French) in the '60's and early '70's; way before any of those techniques made it to the mainstream of American music. There are songs from 1968 that sound so current, they could be hits today. Also, I'm partial to his really early recordings when ... Read More:

As a guitar player, I must admit that the late 60s (66-69) were holly grale for any rock'n roll heavy fan. Hallyday recorded some of his most fantastic stuff at that time, though personal issues that led him twice at least to suicide attempts...
Some cover versions, lots of originals too, but pure hard rock delirium anyhow. "A tout casser" (68) is one of the greatest gem of that time, pure psychedelic hard rock, with Jimmy Page on electric guitars, as well as "Né dans la rue" or "Voyage au pays des vivants" (hear the live version to know what it is all about...)

I love this album. Their songs are melodic and harmonic. The lyrics are poetic and insightful, with beautiful and haunting imagery, reflecting a variety of states of mind, from tortured to introspective to joyful. The words are all in French, so to truly appreciate their music I've been driven to the dictionary. My favorite of all is "Chaque Seconde," reminding us to savor the pleasure of existence. And nobody writes passionate love songs like the French!

Wow, massive pop attack! You like pop, you like Europeans and keyboards? This is the album for ya. Brezel and Franciose mix up some uber-cool tracks, my favorites being "Wir Tanzen in 4-Eck" (means,"we dance in four corners"), "Nationale 7". and "L'Amour a Toi" (french: "love between three (of us)". The new release has cool new stuff, but my favorites were on the original as well. Japanese, turkish, french, english and german listeners will get the lyrics, but anyone can rock out with em. Cool cartoon-y album art as well.

This is a great album. It's like vintage Depeche Mode or New Order in all it's arch hip goofiness, only very slightly darker, not quite as pop (but very close! Not to worry!) in French & twenty years late..
Or is it late? It all started with those crazy French to begin with, no? Back in the sixties? Isn't New Wave nothing more than Rive Gauche artiness, androgyny, faux intellectuallism & caberet style (clothes! make up! hair!) all fused with that punk rock sensibility? Maybe it's not late, just perpetual?
It's great stuff, anyhow. Dig it, man. Dig it. Creuse-le, mon frere.
Heh heh.
Let me just reccomend you cue up the title track "Paradize," then "Mao Boy!" (Mao Boy! Love the title!) ... Read More:

Zazie has an excellent voice - smooth, expressive, sensual, French...
I can only second the positive comments already made about this fine artist and add that it is a crying shame that talentless and expressionless singers and singers of generic Western music sell millions of albums and performers like Zazie go unnoticed. There ain't no justice.
Listen to "J'aime j'aime pas", "Excuse-Moi" and the very smooth "La Dolce Vita" for a cross-section of the sort of music on display on this album.
This is one of those albums I listen to when I want to hear a good singer and some strong but smooth beats. A very classy and entertaining album.
