This CD showcases the best of Serge, in my opinion.
Somehow I think that Serge loved this period best. I think that this is where his heart was - long before he turned into Gainsbarre and the late 60s - 80s.
The song "Couleur Cafe" itself is an enduring classic of French popular music. To this day one can still hear it being played on the radio in France.

Well, it's a crime that this has not been reviewed yet. And I am not good enough to do Zazie justice. I have been thinking about why I like what I like. I think the standard is basically to compare everything against The Beatles. I think so much of what I like has the qualities of originality, harmony, melody, good rock, interesting lyrics, tells a story, makes you feel something, and to me, most importantly...makes me move my body. Zazie has all those qualities. I have heard people compare to her to other "more talented" singers. That isn't the point- Zazie does what she does and does it so well. So how do I describe? Maybe a jazzier Feist. But you can't exclude how the french language and way of thinking contributes to this music. It seems that someday ... Read More:

Not much french music get exported because most of it is too french. Jacques Dutronc's first album of 1968 is GREAT, it's a Classic, and will be immortalized in a decade or so. Come to think of it anything that was released in 1968 was amazing!! But I think this album reflects the political and social upheaval during the Paris 1968 student revolts. Dutronc portrays himself as the true countercultural that stands outside the chaos. Gainsbourg as gained his long overdue credit recently in the States. Dutronc is next. As an album, "Jacques Dutronc" only comes in second to "Melody Nelson."

The popular opinion out there seems to be that this album does not live up to the first. I disagree. Kyo's sophmore release may not be brilliant but it is a good album and deserves a thoughtful listen. I, personally, love this album. It is dark and emotional, less sugary than the first. The vocals are melancholy and glorious. "Sarah" is the popular single release and is a fine song, but when I heard "Dans Ma Chair" I was blown away by it. The guitar intro is reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins crossed with Bush's "Greedy Fly". Another notable track is "L'Enfer". I confess, my understanding of French is minimal so I cannot comment on the lyrical value of the music but the sound intrigues me and this is presently one of my favorite albums. The bonus ... It takes a while to get used to the thin quivering voice of Ana Torroja but once you do, she delivers beautifully. She is a little uneven in her choice of material with some songs just slipping by as mere pop filler and others sticking to your head like a bad dream , "Duele el Amor" for example. This is a very gentle and smooth record which sets Ana Torroja aside from other recent spanish authors that tend to cater to more aggressive or political audiences.

This is THE coolest CD ever! If you like rock, pop, lounge and sexy breathy vocals, you will love this!! There are some really innovative, tunes on this cd, especially the duets w/Serge Gainsbourg, but others stand the test of time as well, and really rock! The sound quality is excellent, and the photo booklet is very informative. Brigitte is a definite babe!!
