Cognoscenti from the late 50's and early 60's know Erik Darling as one of the premier folksingers of the period, though he tended to stay in the background - as a group member (the Tarriers, the Weavers, the Rooftop Singers) and as a session musician on too many recordings to list. Originally released in 1958, shortly after he joined the Weavers, this disc is the first of a small number of solo outings. Although his next two - 'True Religion' and 'Train Time', both on Vanguard - are far superior, this one offers a fascinating look at a master in the making just before the mastery fully manifested itself. The sound quality isn't great, though -- the record sounds like it was made in a living room (which, for all I know, it was).

This is an excellent compilation of Odetta's best stuff. The collection covers her years with Tradition Records to Vanguard Records. This will satisfy both the soulful, gospel fan, as well as as some folk legends such as Bob Dylan.

This is a strong finish to the anthology of Seeger's Folkways recordings. As with all of Smithsonian Folkways releases, it includes detailed liner notes and thoughtful selection. I would have liked for the discographical information about the original releases to be a bit clearer. Overall, though, this 5-volume set is the best selected and documented collection of Pete's stunning and influential recordings. Pete enjoyed more attention and success later, too, but these are the recordings that propelled the folk explosion and they have lost none of their power.

This is a fabulous CD. My favorite song on it is Jug of Punch, I have such great memories of listening to them sing it back in the 60's. It was great to rediscover them recently when I found this CD of songs I heard on old LP records! (Holy cow -- remember RECORDS??)

The best part is listening without the crackeling sound of records that you've played hundreds of times!

If you like the Clancy Brothers, you'll love this CD.

I listened to this group on Amazon and was in love. I played this terrific CD and enjoyed it thoroughly. This group has a big sound, with very strong beautiful voices. If you enjoy groups do not miss this one!

Garden of Joy/Jim Kweskin's America

The two disks in this set are quite distinct. The first is vintage Jim Kweskin jug band music, but it is only 33 minutes long. Stingy. The second consists of 10 mostly well-known mostly sentimental songs sung soggily.

My rating is based on four stars for the first disk and zero stars for the second. I find it hard to relate the two glowing views posted above to the album that I heard.
