This disk is a delight for children as well the young at heart. The songs are fun and singable. The acompanying booklet contains the words to every song, so that you can sing along. The booklet also includes motions and/or other activities to go along with a few of the songs. This disk is a great way to introduce young children to the wonderful heritage of American folk music. Adults will enjoy it as well.

I came across this as a 'you might also like' for "O Brother, Where Art Thou"..a fantastic soundtrack you must get. This...is nothing like it. It's more like what Pa Ingalls played for Laura in Little House on the Prarie. Not to say that's bad, but it's not what you would expect. Be sure to listen to samples first, to know what you're getting.

If you've seen the folk music mockumentary 'A Mighty Wind' you'll remember Mitch and Mickie, the canadian duo that had that perfect chemistry and created some of the folk 'anthems' of their generation - well, Ian and Sylvia are their real-life counterparts. This CD box-set covers every I&S Vanguard release. The songs are a great mixture of originals, covers (early Dylan, Lightfoot, among others), and traditional (blues, appalachian, british isles). Over the course of these four discs Ian & Sylvia evolve from tradional acoustic folkies to singer-songwriters making country-tinged electrified rock. The sound quality of this collection is excellent. If you are or Ian & Sylvia - or Mitch & Mickie - you need these DCs.

If you want to know how sea chanties originally sounded on the decks and under them back in the 18th and 19th centuries, this is an album for you. It can be a time-consuming process to sort through the load of sea chanty albums out there that when you're trying to find the traditional sound. Therefore, if you like the sound of this album I also recommend the following albums, composed by various performers including some on this album: Shanties & Songs of the Sea; Round Cape Horn; Sailors' Songs & Sea Shanties. These albums have a great mix of emotion in them, from rip-roarin' drinking songs to inspirational working songs to melancholy tunes about ships that were swallowed up by the sea.

"What better singer to interpret the dark, enigmatic songs of Canadian bard Leonard Cohen than the equally enigmatic Judy Collins?"asked one reviewer. I'll respond: Jennifer Warnes. Check out the 20th anniversary release of Famous Blue Raincoat with four new songs on it and most will agree with me . . . except of course the truly die hard Judy Collins fans (which in most cases I am but not when it comes to Cohen and Warnes). Sorry.

I listened to this on LP as I was growing up. I longed listen to it again after I moved away from home. It is a great find for those who love vintage folk music.

Joe Glazer had done quite a few albums devoted to the "American Labor Movement." He wrote and performed a number of the songs assembled here, and you get a real sense of what he was all about.
Paul Robeson kicks the collection off with a fantastic and truly classic rendering of "Joe Hill."
Maybe unintentionally, though, many of the remaining songs testify to the sad state of the labor movement today. Tunes like "VDT" and "Automation" establish, rather than disestablish, that unions today serve virtually no purpose in the face of comprehensive goverment oversight of workplace practices, antidiscrimination laws ("Too Old To Work") and (as something like a general premise) the more enlightened practices of business leaders.

The two disks in this set are quite distinct. The first is vintage Jim Kweskin jug band music, but it is only 33 minutes long. Stingy. The second consists of 10 mostly well-known mostly sentimental songs sung soggily.
My rating is based on four stars for the first disk and zero stars for the second. I find it hard to relate the two glowing views posted above to the album that I heard.

Jackson's work is as storied as his face. So if his visage is even remotely intriguing, I urge you to add this to your cart.
It's incredible the beautiful and heartbreaking things a man can produce against tremendous, seemingly insurmountable odds. But don't fret; this is no Lifetime movie. This is a bare nerve. This is a removal of stitches just to show you the depth of the wound. In much the same way Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and Veedon Fleece illustrate a place we have all encountered, Jackson C Frank's discography returns us to a place we didn't know anyone else had visited.
