Joe Glazer had done quite a few albums devoted to the "American Labor Movement." He wrote and performed a number of the songs assembled here, and you get a real sense of what he was all about.

Paul Robeson kicks the collection off with a fantastic and truly classic rendering of "Joe Hill."

Maybe unintentionally, though, many of the remaining songs testify to the sad state of the labor movement today. This is a great CD! From the time I was born, we always had music in the home, and I grew up with The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, and The New Christy Minstrels. This is a wonderful, well-produced compilation of their music. I especially love the 'live' section recorded at the Troubadour, which is lively and lighthearted. Listening brought back many memories, but I think anyone who enjoys American folk music would enjoy this CD.

Released in October 1965, Donovan's 2nd UK album for Pye Records is represented on this "Expanded Edition" by Tracks 1 to 12 - and it's something of a lost Sixties Folk/Rock classic.

The album's opener "Colours" is a balls-to-the-wall 60's classic - it truly is. "Fairytale" features a lot of tracks like that - just Donovan and his acoustic guitar - more Folk than Pop really. In fact, when you hear almost any track on this very hard-to-find LP, it's easy to see why Donovan was often referred to as Britain's Bob Dylan. And it wasn't just because of the similar vocal styles - they were both such good songwriters and commentators on the times.

Overall a good CD with a nice variety. Only downer for me though is that the "Banana Boat Song", "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"; and "Goodnite Irene" are not my idea of folk music and just didn't seem to "fit" with the other songs on the CD.

Definitive New Christy Minstrels

I remember the sounds of the New Christy Minstrels in my younger years. What a great group with Barry McGuire and Kenny Rogers among others. I especially liked their renditions of "Green Green", "Today" and "Saturday Night". FIRST RATE STUFF!!!

The Brothers Four were popular at the same time the Kingston Trio was big. I felt these guys were just as good and sometimes better. I still have the original LP of these recordings. Years later they appeared at a convention hall and my husband took me to see them perform. I took the LP album with me and after their performance, I asked them to autograph it. It's one of the highlights of my life.

This is an album that I bought back in the 70's and was pleased to find it in cd format. Shel passed away in the 90's I beleive but his humor and talent lives on....

Vanguard Sessions: Baez Sings Dylan

Joan Baez has the wrong vocal quality for most of these songs, and the arrangements make little sense. I don't believe one can sing "St. Augustine" worse than Ms. Baez does here, four-square and lifeless, and, gee, if that song screams "Nashville" to an arranger, that person needs another line of work.
