This is a compilation of the New Lost City Ramblers after Tom Paley Left. I confess I am old enough to be used to feeling the world was divided between people who felt that the NLCR was no good after Paley left and those who were willing to accept New Commer Tracy Schwartz who probably going to take the NLCR out of Western Swing and into Rock and Roll or some other forms of modern foolishness. I wonder if there would have been such squacking if the Ramblers had obtain the services of the man they wanted to replace Paley with, Doc Watson!!!
I remember going down to a record store off Dupont Circle in DC on one afternoon in 1965 when I picked up the first post Paley Album "Gone to the Country." Boy were those bluegrass numbers, ... Read More:

So I just received my copy and it is definitely NOT a "Japanese repressing in cardboard mini-LP sleeve" or whatever appears in the item description. In fact it's a reissue on San Fran's Water Records...a cool label, but one whose remastering tends to leave a lot to be desired. Eric Gale's 'Ghetto Music' album is what I have in mind -- its mastered to be unbelievably harsh on your ears, not just another victim of the 'loudness wars' although it is that as well, but EQ'd really badly. Sounds awful. Franco Battiato 's "Fetus" fared slightly better, but not by much.
I haven't even taken this out of the shrink wrap yet because I want to find reviews of this particular pressing.. I'll probably end up opening it but I am a bit peeved that ... Read More:
This CD is such a lucky find; it has some of the best music I grew up with, and performed featuring Theodore Bikel too! Since my old stuff is all on 78's I thought I'd never hear the beautiful songs again. The Pennywhistlers are a really authentic sounding group and this is a wonderful CD.

Great songs, I have the record but never the less great songs. "Black crow blues" is a great one, no guitar or harmonica, just piano. "I dont believe you", "Spanish Harlem Incident" and "To Ramona" are all great songs too. "Motorpsyco Nightmare" is hilarious.

As a teenager I was transfixed by the personality and poetry of this duo.
The integrity and american flavor of this husband and wife team defines the mood of the early 60's. I disagree that these tunes are dated."Swallow song" is one of my perennial favorites but all these songs hold up,in fact better than Joan Baez in my opinion, and Mimi was her sister. This is folk music with beauty depth and meaning.

I saw Pete three times in the 1960's, all after this album was recorded, and all were primarily "adult audience" shows at the height of the fervor over civil rights. However, no Seeger concert went on without a kids' song or three, and when I picked this CD up in a bargain bin the other day, it brought back fond memories of watching him sing "Here's to Chesire, Here's to Cheese" and "Abiyoyo" live. His joy in performing was infectious, and he never let the audience off the hook if the song could be enhanced by their participation. Still, the songs mainly belong to a fading era, as Pete himself tells this NYC audience of children, in which "Families had to make their own music, and make up their own stories to entertain themselves." I have four grandchildren, ages two to eight, ... Read More:

If you haven't heard of Buffy then this is a great starter with a wide selection from her original Vanguard Studio Albums of the 1960s-70s.
You'll take a trip through a variety of genres from her haunting Native North American Sounds, Folk Roots, 70s Orchestrations, Controversial Soundtracks (ie Soldier Blue), Nashville Country and Unreleased Bonus Tracks.
The Ultimate Surprise was to hear a Remastered, Cleaned up version of her European Hit song 'Soldier Blue' from her album She used to wanna be a Ballerina. That alone is wonderful !

I've owned an LP version of the US combined release "Donovan P. Leitch" of this album and Fairytale since since it came out in 1970. Digitized it about a decade ago, complete with the clicks, pops, had hiss it had acquired. I am delighted to have a CD release of this material. This is the foundation that his later efforts were built on and, although most tracks are simply voice, guitar, and harmonica, the "set" has aged well. It's a mix of his own material with songs by others, and the original material points toward the poetry that would emerge on Fairytale. "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" have long been personal favorites but, really there isn't a clinker in the lot.

Mixing the "whack fol diddly eye day" type of mouth music making when a singer imitates an instrument, ballads about cuckoldry, spousal drowning, slow poisoning, and "false young men" who lead fair maidens astray, and finally simple instrumentals, this 1955 recording sounds great. Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and many other folk and folk-rock listeners of the 60s adapted quite a few of these songs into more contemporary sonic settings, but the purity of these field recordings by Diane Hamilton also captures a moment now lost--singers and players in their native habitat of the Irish rural house one night. Not only the Makems and Clancys, by the way. The mastering of this allows you to hear the catch of breath, the second's hesitation as a woman's voice joins the man's in ... Read More:
