Jean Ritchie's story has an almost mythic quality about it.
Raised in Appalachian Kentucky, she got her college degree and
moved to New York to help in the inner-city. There folks discovered her knowledge of the folk songs and mountain dulcimer music with which she was raised. She's often been credited with being the person who brought the mountain dulcimer to the attention of the broader public.
This collection of songs chooses a broad selection, commencing from her very first album to her later work. The songs here emphasize vocals, not dulcimer, so that is not a "Hendrix of the dulcimer" approach to this music. The spare, two and four track productions have an enchanting "live" quality, and Ms. Ritchie's voice has ... Read More:

By all rights, I should we reviewing the other twofer of early Judy Collins,3 & 4: JUDY COLLINS #3 / THE JUDY COLLINS CONCERT, because it wasn't until the 3rd album, I feel, that Judy finally found her true voice. What is very interesting to do, if you are a Judy Collins fan AND a Joan Baez fan (not so much if you already favor one over the other), is to directly compare the songs Judy did on these first two records with the common songs from the early Baez catalog. There is a tentative quality to Judy's approach completely absent from the Baez renditions of "Man [Maid] Of Constant Sorrow," "Wild Mountain Thyme," and "The Great Selchie of Shule Skerry" (titled "The Silkie" on JOAN BAEZ Vol. 2). However, it's on a couple of the exceptions, "John ... Read More:

This album is just as good as first two volumes. The artists involved truly have a respect for the originals. If you like this music then I recommend you check out these great collections of folk music by various artists: "O Brother Where Art Thou?" "Ain't No Grave" and "Cold Mountain".

When this was released, I think in 2000, I sort of went over the moon. Here they were at last, everything that had been released in America on the Hickory label. All the pre Mickey Most, pre psychedelic stuff. Well there's those songs that came out on "Troubadour" and the stuff on "Sixty Four" the album of pre "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid" record that's only available on Donovan's website. Still, this is one fine set. You can skip all the other (and there's a zillion of 'em) compilation records of Donovan's early stuff and just get this.
I'll say, it has never ceased to amaze me how they keep coming up with ways to repackage Donovan's stuff. I'll bet you could buy a couple dozen Albums and you'd still just have the songs that are included ... Read More:

I had been waiting for years to up-date my album of "I'm Satisfied" to CD-Format. Finally they brought it out and I am delighted! Well you certainly can't beat the fact that they paired it with "Source Point", which is very good as well; but the creme de la creme is "I'm Satisfied".
It is John at his electric best, the songs are all superb choices, his voice is at it's best, and the sound production is great. I have 8 of his Albums/CDs and this along with "City Boy Blues" are among my desert Island pics. Grab it up, you won't be sorry!

In "A Study in Scarlet", Sherlock Holmes reminds Dr. Watson of Darwin's claim that the power of producing and appreciating music existed among the human race before the power of speech was arrived at. "Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it," Holmes goes on to say. "There are vague memories in our souls of those misty centuries when the world was in its childhood". This Glenn Yarborough arrangement might serve as proof of such a proposition.
Now Yarborough's fine tenor and winning personality stand on their own - but perhaps not as well as they once blended with the voices and personalities of Lou Gottlieb and Alex Hassilev as part of the Limeliters.
There's nothing wrong with this fine set of recordings made by Yarborough ... Read More:

The Essential Pete SeegerThe music here presents Pete in his early years. Most of the songs are recorded live & unlike his later concerts he does not prompt the audience to sing along.
The BIG problem that I had with this recording was that it was NOT REMASTERED WELL, the volume is up to 12db low. I needed to re-record the entire CD, pumping up the volume individually on each track (excluding the clapping...) so that the songs played at a reasonable volume.
